Character: Excella Gionne

Fandom: Resident Evil

Personality

Excella Gionne was born to a privileged and wealthy family, and her upbringing certainly reflects that. Her grandmother was a member of the famed Travis family, who ran a very successful import/export business in Europe. She is currently the CEO of Tricell’s African Division.

She has two older brothers who were very close with one another but dismissive and deprecating toward her while growing up (and continuing through present-day). This, combined with her father’s drinking habits and chauvinistic tendencies, caused Excella to develop a rather distasteful attitude toward men; although this is more of an implied attitude rather than an expressly stated sentiment, she does tend to make disparaging remarks on the subject from time to time. She soon learned how to use her assets to manipulate and discard them, and feels no real remorse for doing so. She’s assertive, and a little overbearing, but she knows what she wants and how to get it.

Excella is quite intelligent - she entered university at a rather young age, graduating early with a degree in genetic engineering, and then went on to join Tricell’s pharmaceutical division at age eighteen. However, she knows when to use her intelligence versus her other assets - i.e., she uses her brain when she knows the person in question would be impressed by it, but doesn’t flaunt it when said person would be intimidated and put off.

Although she’d like to believe that she’s an impassive ice queen, the truth is that Excella does tend toward the dramatic, is impatient, and often lets her temper get the better of her. However, this is not to say that she is out of control. She is more than capable of keeping her mouth shut when it really matters, but usually cannot resist retorting with witty and insulting rejoinders, even when it’s likely to get her into trouble.

She likes to keep secrets (even when the information is truly of no importance) merely to have the power of holding things over other people’s heads; she’s also prone to lying both to suit her purposes and simply to stir up trouble. This pettiness (along with her compulsive need to save face and preserve her pride) has gotten her into trouble more often than she’d care to admit.

Despite her (perceived) flaws, Excella is loyal and caring to those close to her-however, these people are generally few and far in between, so that side of her doesn’t come out often. When it does, though, nothing stands in the way of securing their safety and general happiness.

History

As stated above, Excella grew up in a wealthy household, and had many advantages that led her to the successful position she is in today (though I think it’s important to note that her triumphs were based mainly on her own merit). She graduated with a degree in genetic engineering at an early age, and joined Tricell’s pharmaceutical division at the age of eighteen.

From there, she continued to work her way through the ranks, but since she was only from an offshoot of the Travis family (Tricell’s founders), she was deemed relatively less valuable than those of “pure” Travis blood, and subsequently given less favor and advantages in that respect. When she began serious research in Tricell’s name, she was given only one research team, despite the fact that the business had plenty at its disposal. Naturally, Excella was offended, and began to actively resent the relatives of hers who were holding her back.

It was then that she was approached by Albert Wesker, who-intrigued by Excella’s position, ambition, and temperament-provided Excella with the information necessary to greatly advance Tricell’s bioweaponry unit. This came at a time when the number one contender in that arena, Umbrella, was quickly deteriorating. With Wesker’s help, Excella expanded Tricell’s sway in the bioweaponry world, effectively increasing her clout in that area by tenfold and, in conjunction with Umbrella’s declaration of bankruptcy and subsequent dissolution, making Tricell the most powerful corporation in the weapons market.

The top executives at Tricell noted Excella’s numerous contributions to the company’s advancement, and with a little manipulation, Excella was able to use their gratitude to snag the CEO position of Tricell’s African division. Under Wesker’s advisement, she re-opened and took over Umbrella’s African Research facility, where she used the progress made there on the Progenitor virus to implement research on the Uroboros virus.

>> I’ll be playing Excella from a time after she began working with Wesker and Tricell’s African branch, but well before the events of RE5.
