Oh gracious. Are there no farmer's markets where you live? No organic food sellers? I CANNOT FATHOM A LIFE WITHOUT PROPER TOMATOES it seriously upsets me. D:
I mean, they are /around/, but it's ... winter time, or just coming out of it, so the local guys don't have any. Someone's got to have greenhouse ones, for sure, but I haven't found any yet. (And they aren't as good as summer tomatoes, frown.)
I have never eaten them that way and that sounds delicious. I might go lighter on the mayo, as too much gets to me sometimes, but mmmmmmmmmmm. Mmm.
I like to just eat them like apples, just take a bite. Crunch. Sometimes sprinkle on a little salt. Onion powder sounds so perfect right now, though.
I like to take a bunch of tomatoes, chop them up, and cucumbers, and put them in oil and vinegar and let them sit for awhile, then add some pepper and a pinch of salt -- they taste so good. ;.;
I don't know how you could go about finding one in your area, but my roomie/landlord is part of a "vegetable share", where you either donate produce or money, and you get a share of whatever was donated, every month or alternating week. Its always local, organic, and in season, but beyond those clues you don't know what you're getting. When I moved in in August, she had tomatoes all over the place! With ours, we get local fresh eggs, too. But we've also gotten weird greens and squash we didn't know what to do with :/
My dad slices 'em, then drizzles olive oil & salt & pepper, and tops 'em with fresh mozzarella slices and basil.
I'm so happy you wrote this Ode to the Tomato!! I LOVE them too. I saw Soire's "recipe", and I have to put mine too- bread, soft and chewy or toasted and crunchy, whatevs, drizzled with olive oil, topped with big slices of tomato and a slice of provolone. ahhhh!
