So I was checking my bank accounts today to discover that my supposedly fee-free checking account has been charged a $20 maintenance fee for the last two months. Currently chatting w/ customer support. Blah, that sucks. From what I can tell, this type of thing is relatively common and most people don't notice or fight it, so the bank sells you a supposed fee free account then makes money. I get infuriated about it.

Well, it's supposed to be fee-free because we also have our mortgage through them. The person I chatted with initially said, oh, the accounts were opened in different states, so that's why it doesn't count. Which, of course, is bullshit, since I had to open the checking account when I got the mortgage and it's been fee-free for 3 1/2 years. Meh. Just checked my account again and the refund still isn't showing up. I'll give it until tomorrow (next business day) before I bug them again. But you're right, many people don't notice. In fact, I missed it last month, probably because the statement came out right before Christmas.
