When she comes back from the dead, he would have understood the feeling of unreality, without taking any other advantage of it.

He's not threatened by her.

He learns from her, then reteaches the lessons back.

He was the one to care for her after Joyce's funeral.

He still loves her after years apart (enduring Spike's taunts about stalking by proxy with a simple "It's Buffy).
