Chapter 12 - "The Best Dream"
As the cool air grazed against JaeJoong’s skin as he ran down the street, he couldn’t help but remain apprehensive. Where was YunHo? He didn’t want the kid to be lost somewhere, or worse, kidnapped by some money hungry stranger. Kidnapping is a very scary crime and it could happen to anyone.
“Damn it, YunHo…” JaeJoong’s heart was pounding as his feet slowed down. He supported his body on a wall and caught breath. “Where is he?...hah…”
Once JaeJoong was ready, he ran towards the nearest hang-outs around YunHo’s village. He asked every clerk from every store, karaoke place and clubs if they’ve seen a tall, tanned student probably in a blue high school uniform and if they saw his distinct mole above his lip. For every clerk he asked, they all shook their heads.
‘Nice one, JaeJoong… as if they’d remember out of hundreds that have passed by here…nice…’ JaeJoong slapped himself on the forehead for not thinking of bringing a picture of YunHo.
Meanwhile, unknown to JaeJoong, the person he was looking for was actually looking for him as well.
YunHo went around the houses near his block to see if JaeJoong was near by.
“JaeJoong-hyung!” he called out. There was no answer, as if that was surprising. YunHo ran down every street corner, every bus stop and still no sign of his tutor.
‘Man, where can he be?’
As YunHo turned the corner, JaeJoong emerged from the opposite side, both men missing the other.
“This is gonna be a long night…” they said to no one.
DongHae recalled the conversation he had with his best friend; the conversation about DongHae’s first love. The memories of his boyfriend kept coming back. How he was so in love back then that he even considered running away with HyukJae but after they talked about their future and it clashed, he didn’t know what to do. Breaking-up was their best option apparently. DongHae regretted it. Now he was too upset that he wanted to go to a bar and drink his worries away.
He wore his best clothes and drove his convertible to Bar Zero. Once there, he was allowed in and the pumping music was pulsing through his body. After a few shots, he was already a tad tipsy and began dancing with every girl and guy he thought was attractive.
At one point, he was invited to the room of one of the girls but he rejected their offer. Instead, he accepted the offer of a male stranger that seemed to fit DongHae’s style. The stranger pulled on DongHae’s wrist until some stranger broke their connection and stood in front of DongHae.
“Stay away from him,” the stranger said.
“What the-What’s up with you?!” the other man pushed the stranger.
The stranger punched DongHae’s supposed one-night stand. The stranger grabbed DongHae’s arm and they ran out of the bar.
They crossed a few streets, turned a few corners and they luckily got as far away from the place as possible. DongHae was trying to get his thoughts together. His head was hurting and after some physical feat, he needed to catch breath. But first, who was this stranger?
“Excuse me… but… who are you?” DongHae raised his head and was shocked to see it wasn’t a stranger but someone he knew.
“It’s been a while… DongHae-yah…”
“Hyuk…HyukJae-yah…”
“YunHo-yah! YunHo, where are you?!” JaeJoong shouted at the empty sidewalk. His legs were shaking, shivering from the cold night breeze. “I’m going to give this kid a hard time for disappearing…damn…”
JaeJoong leaned against a tree and rested.
“It’s okay, JaeJoong. Just think…where else could YunHo be?”
The 21-year old thought of every place YunHo could be. There had to be a place that was open at this hour, some place that YunHo would like to be or most likely stay at. Suddenly, JaeJoong thought of something. He slapped himself for not thinking of it earlier.
“Stupid! His dance studio!”
After JaeJoong’s revelation, he ran to the nearest bus stop so he could get down near YunHo’s underground dance studio. When the bus stopped, JaeJoong exited the bus and rushed to the dance studio. The adrenalin streamed inside him, pumping his heart. He was hoping he’d see YunHo inside, dancing, sitting, standing or doing whatever. He just needed to know he was there. JaeJoong swung open the studio door and-no luck. YunHo wasn’t there.
JaeJoong was sweating all over from the running. He leaned against the wall and slid down until his bottom hit the floor. He brushed his fingers through his wet hair, aggravated to say the least.
“YunHo…you crazy idiot…where the heck are you?”
“JaeJoong-hyung! Jaejoong-hyung! Where are you?!” YunHo shouted at the top of his lungs. He considered trying out the red light district but figured his tutor wouldn’t think he went to those places-no… wait… would JaeJoong think that? Anyways, YunHo listed all of the places JaeJoong might’ve gone.
So he tried the restaurants, the night mall and even the bars. He couldn’t find JaeJoong anywhere.
“Where can he be?!” he panted. “Where’s the one place JaeJoong-hyung thinks I’ll be at?”
Then something snapped inside of YunHo and a light bulb lit.
“I got it!” YunHo took the next bus nearest him and after a 10-minute ride, he arrived at the place. He ran down the stairs, through the hallway and opened the door. He was at his underground dance studio and the lights were off. He went inside and there was no one. That was until he turned his head to the side and looked down to see JaeJoong stare back at him.
“Jae…JaeJoong-hyung?” YunHo fell on his knees and placed his arms on JaeJoong’s shoulders.
“YunHo?” JaeJoong inhaled and wiped his eyes.
“Were you crying?” YunHo asked.
“What?! No, I wasn’t! Why the hell would I cry?!”
“Did you cry because you thought I was kidnapped?”
“Stop thinking nonsense! Of course not! S-Something caught in my eye, you dimwitted brat-“
YunHo suddenly took JaeJoong in his arms and hugged so tight it was as if there was no more air surrounding them. Everything disappeared around them, as what YunHo thought.
“YunHo?”
“I love you, JaeJoong-hyung…”
YunHo didn’t expect to hear a reply. But what he heard next made his heart jump.
“I love you, too.”
YunHo’s eyes widened as he released JaeJoong from their hug and stared at him, disbelieving what he just heard.
“Did you-what did you-“ YunHo was looking like a total dork with his mouth open and eyes not blinking for a second. JaeJoong smiled and thought how cute he was being. He placed his palms on YunHo’s cheeks and repeated his words.
“I. Love. You. It took me a while to get used to the idea… but after getting some advice, I’m willing to take a risk with my heart.”
JaeJoong just smiled and looked at YunHo, not with his eyes but, with his heart. He didn’t want to risk his heart by falling in love but after getting to know the brat that is YunHo, he didn’t mind the gamble with love.
“You’re not joking, right?”
“You think I’d kid about something like this?” JaeJoong raised his eyebrow.
“No…It…It’s just hard to believe…that you…”
JaeJoong placed his finger on YunHo’s lips and shushed him.
“How about you shut up and kiss me now?”
YunHo pulled himself together and leaned in to kiss JaeJoong. When their lips touched, he felt like he was melting into a pile of goo. His heart was beating so fast that he was afraid JaeJoong could hear it. Nothing in the world was as important as his tutor at that moment.
Same went for JaeJoong. His heart, mind and soul all taken so easily by an 18-year old high school student. Who knew this could happen to him?
When they pulled back from the kiss that lasted like forever, they rested their foreheads against each other and just wanted to stay that way eternally.
YunHo caressed JaeJoong’s cheeks and asked, “Does this mean we’re going out?”
JaeJoong smirked, “What do you think it means?”
“Please don’t play mind games on me…”
“Haha…am I?”
“Gah! Stop it!”
“What’s wrong? I’m just teasing you.”
YunHo pouted. JaeJoong pinched YunHo’s nose and stuck out his tongue. He then was tickle attacked by YunHo.
“Yah! Hahaha! Stop! Stop it!!”
“No! I will not! Haha!”
After a few minutes, they stopped to catch breath and YunHo lied down beside JaeJoong. He turned to face the older, as did JaeJoong. Their hands were linked and they could only feel the joy.
“JaeJoong-hyung…”
“Hm?”
“What happens to that boyfriend of yours?”
That was until JaeJoong asked that question.
“You’re gonna break up with him…aren’t you?” YunHo asked.
“Of course I will.”
“When?”
“Tomorrow. I’ll do it tomorrow.”
“Why not tonight? You’re roommates with him, aren’t you?”
“It’s late… he’s probably asleep by now.”
“Oh...You’re right.”
“We should get back to your mom. She’s probably worried sick.”
“Yeah…”
JaeJoong was about to get up when he was pulled back down and arms snaked around his waist.
“YunHo-yah…”
“Five more minutes. I want to make sure this isn’t a dream.”
JaeJoong sighed and placed his arms on top of YunHo’s.
“Don’t worry… if this was a dream, this is the best dream ever,” JaeJoong silently said.
“Oh thank heavens!” Bo Hana ran towards the door where her son and his tutor were. She hugged them both.
“I’m so glad you two are safe. I wouldn’t know what to do if I had lost you two. How about I make us some snacks? You two are probably starved from all the searching.”
“No thanks, Hana-noona, I better get going,” JaeJoong said.
“Hana-noona?” YunHo’s raised his eyebrow.
YunHo’s mother reacted, “Oh, is it weird, YunHo-honey? JaeJoong, instead, call me Hana-eomoni.”
“Eomoni?” JaeJoong reiterated.
“Yes! I feel like you’re just as important as my son. So you’ve earned the privilege of calling me Eomoni.”
YunHo’s mom patted JaeJoong’s head and said, “Now, let’s get some food in your stomachs. JaeJoong, you can stay over if you want.”
“Eh? N-No…it’s too much trouble…”
“Nonsense! I want you to stay over! It’s late and you shouldn’t be traveling at this time of night. Accidents can happen. You should just travel in the morning.”
“Well…”
“Don’t think twice. Just get inside.”
YunHo’s mom tugged on JaeJoong’s arm and he was lunged inside the house. He tumbled and crashed into YunHo who balanced him. The two embarrassingly smiled at each other and realized that YunHo’s mother was just there but her back turned. They immediately let go of each other once YunHo’s mom closed the front door and spun around.
She clapped her hands and said, “Let’s eat!”
She cut up some fruits which left over from the Chuseok celebration. Afterwards, YunHo’s mom gave JaeJoong one of YunHo’s pajamas.
“You can sleep in YunHo’s room, JaeJoong.”
YunHo and JaeJoong looked at each other then back at her.
“N-No! Mom…I-I don’t want to share my room!” YunHo tried to sound as selfish as possible to hide his desire to share a night with JaeJoong.
“You’re being greedy, YunHo! At least let him sleep on the floor next to your bed. I don’t want JaeJoong to catch a cold in the living room.”
“But…mom…”
“No buts! Now, you two should go sleep. You still have school and JaeJoong has to wake up early tomorrow.”
YunHo’s mom pushed the two boys inside YunHo’s room and slammed the door shut. She giggled and thought to herself, ‘They think I don’t know about them? Haha…these boys are too cute.’
Now, JaeJoong and YunHo were left inside a room, feeling very awkward since they never thought the moment of their confession could quickly lead to-maybe-more.
