Sometimes Jongwoon catches Ryeowook singing. When he thinks he is alone and no one can hear him, Ryeowook will hum little melodies and tunes. They’re soft and light and do nothing to showcase his marvelous voice. Jongwoon will stand around the corner of the kitchen or bathroom and listen with his eyes closed, imagining the expressions that must flit across Ryeowook’s face as he sings. He can envision the smiles and the creases in Ryeowook’s brow.
And then Ryeowook’s songs take a painful turn. Sorry sorry sorrys and happy togethers that sound so sad and broken, laced with memories of friends and stages neither of them have seen for years, after a less than unanimous decision that maybe things had run too long and it was time for the Kings to step down. Jongwoon can almost hear the tears hitting the countertop and he knows Ryeowook’s brows are knit together. The songs cut off and Jongwoon steps around the corner to see Ryeowook has a fist, still too thin and fragile, balled against his lips, which quiver with stifled sobs.
He pulls Ryeowook against his chest and hushes him. He kisses Ryeowook’s temples and ear, lips parting to sing his own melody, soft and sweet and only for Ryeowook, until the tears dry and the trembling ceases and Ryeowook can join in the duet.
