The bonzai project sonds like fun, I hope it works well for you. It would be nice to know what to do in working with those different types, something else I really don't know much about.

Impatience, frustration? I dunno. The project will work out somehow, I ordered the saplings off of e-bay, two of them about 6" high each. They're of the yoshino variety, and I'll be posting pictures and documenting their growth.
I'm invariably learning too... and sometimes the right thing doesn't always seem right. And the wrong thing can, but isn't... and recognizing them is decidedly damned difficult sometimes.
I'm going to set up another thread for us to discuss the text messages... and keep from taking this thread off on a tangent.

One looked liked it was almost dead, so my brother appropriated that one... the other is currently sitting in this pitcher waiting to be planted in preparation for its training as bonsai:
