Vintage Sizzix Camera

Dec 26, 2013 00:29

Hello crafters ! I hope Christmas was jolly and a wonderful day was had by everyone. It's almost the end of the year and time for new resolutions, time to put in place plans for your crafting direction. For me, it's the tidying up of my srap space, looking through stuff, packing up products I have outgrown and giving away, prunning and trying to use remainders as much as possible.

Earlier in the week I'd made a few mini-book cameras in different looks from cute to vintage. You can see the other cameras *HERE*. For the tutorial the camera I chose has a grunge, metallic finish you can create with paints. While this post is photo heavy, the camera is not difficult to make and so much fun as you can customise the look to your liking. Make it vintage, make it cute ..... totally up to you !!

The Sizzix products I used are :

Powder Blue and Teal Big Shot
Magnetic Platform
Circle Framelits die set 8pk 657551
Sizzix Bigz Gadget Gears 656636
Vintage Cabinet Card 6
57217
Texture Fade Embossing Folder 2pk - Bubble and Honeycomb

Other supplies :

Paints : Art Anthology, Distress Paints
Inks : Distress Inks - Pine Needles, Gathered Twigs
Metal Paste : Antique Silver Daler Rowney
Cardstock and pattern papers of your choice.

In a box are are lots of small chipboard pieces leftover from projects and I decided to challenge myself to create a really interesting piece with them. Earlier in the week I'd made a few mini-book cameras in different looks from cute to vintage, and looking at the chipboard pieces I had, surely there was more than enough to create another camera.

I die-cut a couple of shapes which I thought might be useful. At this point, I was exploring possibilities, nothing concrete aside from knowing I wanted to make a camera.

I wanted a curved shape but the chipboard was too narrow for the die. No matter, I could use it somehow ! If you are a new Sizzix user, don't worry about not being able to see ways to use the die-cuts. It's all about experience : the more you work with the dies, the more you will see possibilities in the shapes, so go ahead and experiment, play around with the dies.

Above you can see the few ways I tried arranging the chipboards.

Finally, this was the choice I made which I felt resembled a camera the most.

I started by making a book cover with the finished size of 4.5 inches at the top, and 3.5 inches in height. Another idea would be to use a ready made mini book like the Maya Road Kraft alterable books, or even a hard cover book from the dollar store.

I embossed white cardstock with the Honeycomb design. This would be part of the camera body and the embossed paper would add an interesting texture.

Paint the embossed paper with Art Anthology's Sorbet Dimensional Paints to create a metalic look. Tha gellish-like paints have a wonderful sheen, perfect for a metallic looking camera body !

I glued the painted Honeycomb embossed cardstock to the chipboard, and used a craft knife to trim away the excess paper. Adhere the embossed/chipboard piece to the front of the book leaving space to fit the cog in later.

The cogs were inked with Distress Ink Pine Needles and then I rubbed in Silver antique cream metal paste by Daler Rowney. The look is a matt silver with the green showing slightly underneath.

Now we can start assembling the lens for the camera.

Cut a strip of matching pattern paper 1"x12" and roll it into a tube.

The shallow tube should fit over the center of the cog as in the photo above. Securely glue the tube to the cog, then glue the cog to the front of the mini book.

I die-cut a ring using the Circle Framelits together with the magnetic platform, I can't stress how useful this paltform is when working with ultra thin or wafer dies. The ring would be the rim of the lens for the camera.

Adhere the ring to the *lens* of the camera. I added a woodchip embellishment which had been colored silver using the metal paste. Add other embellishments as you like to make the camera your own.

The inside of the book are pages bound together and with the size of 4.5 inches at the top, and 3.5 inches in height, it's perfect for small travel photos.

This really is a fun project, I loved making it and you will too ! Click *HERE* to the post below to see the other cameras. Have a wonderful New Year and may 2014 bring many personal successes and happiness to you and your family. Thank you for coming by !
