I think the whole 'be practical' thing possibly comes from the realization that while he doesn't get acclaim for his philosophical ideas, he does manage to succeed well enough at engineering to make a living, and what could be ore practical than engineering.
Also, while I doubt that Christ came to him in a vision and told him that philosophy was a colossal waste of time, he did start attending church at one point during his transitional phase - possibly looking for the validation that he had failed to receive when discussing philosophy on the interwebs.
