Emmy Rossum icon - Tutorial #1

May 13, 2005 13:49

yay! my first tutorial!! ^_^ this was requested by vilijntje....i tried as hard as i could to recreate the icon i originally made, i came somewhat close ^-^' lol.
okay so we're going from this
to this
.

*using PSP8...could be translated into other programs as well, i suppose*

PLEASE DON'T COPY THIS ICON, USE THE STEPS TO CREATE SOMETHING THAT IS YOUR OWN; THAT'S MAKES IT MORE FUN, ANYWAY :)

okay, first i took this picture of Emmy Rossum from Emmy-Rossum.net and created a 100x100 base. Now we have this:

then i duplicated the base layer twice and set them both to multiply and then duplicated the multiply layer three more times and set those all on screen. then i duplicated the top most screen layer and set it to soft light and desaturated it. okay, now we have this:

next, go to layers > new adjustment layer > hue/saturation/lightness and change the Saturation to -45 and hit "ok". okay, so now it should look like this:

Merge all of the layers.

Okay, i've got this thing about the skin look really smooth and stuff, so i went to adjust > sharpness > sharpen. Once the image has been sharpened a little, grab the soften brush and go over the skin on Emmy's face, carefully avoicing the eyebrows, eyes, nostrils and mouth/lips, and neck. I used the following settings:

size: 5/6 for regular face area, 2 for smaller facial areas. hardness: 50. step: 1. density: 100. thickness: 100

okay, now mine looks like this:

not much difference, right? ;) lol

okay, after softening the skin, select the entire image (Ctrl+A) and copy it to the clipboard (Ctrl+C). Then, delete the image entirely from your canvas. Deselect (Ctrl+D) to make the marquee go away and then "Paste as New Selection" (Ctrl+E). Once the image returns and you are able to place it where ever you wish, move it to the right so that only part of Emmy's face if showing...like this:

and do "Paste as a new layer" (Ctrl+Shift+P)

Once you've positioned the image where you want it and have made it a layer, hit Ctrl+E again, but this time pasting the image on the other side of the canvas. like this:

do "Paste as a new layer" again and then move that newly pasted layer so that it's position UNDER the first layer that you pasted.

okay, next i found a light texture by teh_indy (i used this one specifically) and do another "paste as new selection" (Ctrl+E) over your image. Position it to where it is toward the bottom of the icon and Paste it as a new layer. Then, making sure it is the top most layer, set it to screen, opacity 100%.

so now it should look like this:

now take the eraser tool and set it to opacity 20%. size 51. hardness 50. step 34. density 100. thickness 100.

and just click around the top of the image (namely over the light texture that's coving Emmy's face) until you can clearly see her. it should look something like this when you've finished:

okay, now it's time to have fun with gradients! yay! lol okay, so i used this one:

it's by crumblingwalls.

Anyway, first create a new raster layer and make sure it's positioned ABOVE the light texture layer. then chose that gradient (or just copy and paste it, whatever works ^_^') and set the angle to 40. then select the flood fill tool and click on the image. Set that layer to Hue(L). Opacity 100%. So now you should have this:

to add a little more depth to Emmy's features, I duplicated the layer with the gradient, placed the duplicated layer UNDER the Hue(L) layer and set it to Burn. Opacity 44%. So now i have this:

okay, next, i created another raster layer, ABOVE the Hue(L) layer and did a flood fill with this gradient:

also by crumblingwalls

and set it to Overlay. Opacity 52%.

So now our icon looks like this:

okay, the hard parts are more or less over with now, so you can relax! lol

I've recently aquired a taste for white borders, so what i did for this icon was i chose the Preset Shape Tool and placed a box around the image. Set the vector properties like so:

stroke: white. Stroke width: 3.00. uncheck Anti-Alias.

then Click "ok".

To create the line going between the two halves of the icon, i chose the Pen Tool and used it under the following settings:

Stroke: white. Stroke width: 2.00. uncheck Anti-Alias

then Click "ok".

once you've got your border, right click on the vector layer and click the option "Convert to Raster Layer". okay, now it should look like this:

might be difficult to see b/c the bg to this post is also white :/)

next, select the layer that has the light texture and then click on the "text tool" button. my text is under the following settings:

Book Antiqua. size 6. color: black.

then, click on the area of the icon that has the light texture. I typed "elegance" in lower case and with one space in between each letter, but you may type whatever you wish :)

once you've typed whatever text you want, right click on the Vector layer and convert it once more into a raster layer. set that layer to Luminance(L). opacity 64%.

okay! that's all! Merge the layers and save the icon :) the final product should look something like this:

**Opacities for layers may vary depending upon your image; don't be afraid to experiment!**

I do hope that wasn't too confusing x_X i certainly tried to re-create the original icon (though it is somewhat different :/ sorry) If anyone has any questions at all, please don't hesitate to ask them :) and please let me know what you thought of this tutorial!

Thanks for reading (if you did) and good luck if you try it out :)
