Title:Waking Up
Rating:PG-13
Pairing/Focus:Jongkey
Summary:He didn’t need to wake up just yet.
Key wasn’t one to wake up easily. He would open his eyes; lie in bed for a minute, then drift back into sleep again. He would float between consciousness and unconsciousness for maybe a good half an hour before he would wake up.
But today was different because before he was awake at all, he could feel a pair of eyes on him. When he did open his eyes, but still half-lidded, shifting his body to the left, his right hand rubbing across his face, he saw that certain someone’s face through his half-slit eyes, pupils staring intently at him, mouth gaping slightly, carefully watching his each and every move. Key closed his eyes again, still groggy, but the image of Jonghyun’s eyes was still clear in his mind. Key supposed that he could just be in a dream. Afterall, it wasn’t unusual for Jonghyun to appear in his dreams. But Key still wondered blearily why Jonghyun was sitting beside him on the bed, just staring at him with a blank expression on his face, as if he wanted to remember the curve of Key’s lips, how his eyes dipped down slightly near the bridge of his nose and how his eyelashes skimmed the surface of his skin, just above his cheekbones when his eyelids fluttered. If he wasn’t dreaming, most possibly Jonghyun just wanted to borrow something, another one of Key’s jackets, or a pen or something. Key wasn’t so intent on knowing what, so he just laid there. Besides, he quite liked the sense of Jonghyun’s eyes gazing at him.
Then he heard gentle breathy laughter from beside him that no doubt came from the real-life Jonghyun. Key knew because he always laughed that way, making his laughter sound more like heavy gasps for air. He partially opened his eyes to look up at Jonghyun, running his slim fingers through his choppy hair. “What?” He said, his voice breaking slightly because he didn’t bother to shake himself conscious before speaking.
“You look really cute when you sleep,” chuckled Jonghyun, leaning forward now, his eyes shifting up and down Key’s face as if studying Key like an interesting subject matter. It would have seemed strange or awkward if it was between other people but it didn’t between Key and Jonghyun. It felt so natural the way he just stated it, like a fact.
“Mm hmm, I know...” said Key, shutting his eyes again, the ends of his mouth curving into a self-proud smile that Jonghyun knew too well.
Silence. It was so intensely quiet in the room as Key’s words just dissipated into nothingness in the still air around them. It was much too quiet.
But, unusually, Key was more than awake now. He was on hold, lying with his eyes closed, his palms down, fingertips pressing lightly onto the mattress, heart pounding, mind wandering. He was counting the seconds, waiting for something, anything to happen. But he persisted in keeping his eyes resolutely shut. He knew that if he opened them, he would be facing Jonghyun and... He didn’t want to be the one to make the first move. It just didn’t work that way for him. He longed for it but he taught himself not to show it. He had trained himself well and he was not going to let his facade fall now. However, he knew Jonghyun would do something. He was positive Jonghyun would make a move.
And sure enough, there it was, the tingling of Jonghyun’s light touch on the surface of his skin, just below his ear, just grazing the skin stretched across his jawbone. Key swallowed slowly, noiselessly begging for Jonghyun to continue. And he did. He fingers languidly slipped down to the bottom of his jaw, till it rested on his chin. He carefully lifted Key’s face, so that it was angled smack straight at his own. Key now opened his eyes slowly and cautiously, not wanting to break the soft hold Jonghyun had on him. Their eyes met the moment Key’s luminescent pupils appeared in clear view, and anyone could tell that he was fully awake now.
The look in Jonghyun’s eyes changed drastically, making him look as if he had been shot and wounded, the shock slowly spreading across his face, through those perfectly sculpted features. Suddenly, Jonghyun’s body was crashing down on his, pressing him down onto the bed, their hips colliding painfully. Key’s breath was knocked out of his body and even before he could inhale, Jonghyun’s lips were on his in a bittersweet kiss that seemed so perfectly surreal. But Key knew it was real as their teeth scraped against each other in their eagerness and unfamiliarity. Key was so confused yet satisfied with the sensation of Jonghyun’s palm firmly against the back of his head lifted his face slightly, pressing him closer, their heartbeats slowly syncing, familiarizing themselves with the feeling of having each other in such close proximity. It was so similar to each back hug, playful punch and hand on cheek they gave each other every day, yet it was so different in a way how their breaths mingled in the packed space between their bodies and their tongues slid over each other in a fast, well-paced rhythm only they could hear.
“Jonghyun, is Key awake yet?” Key heard Onew’s muffled call from behind the shut door, trying to be the leader that he was, gathering all the members for an early start to their hectic day. Key’s breath was caught in his throat as he widened his eyes, pupils dilated, beckoning for Jonghyun to say something.
Jonghyun broke the kiss for a second just to shout out quickly, breathlessly, off-handedly, “Don’t worry, I’m working on it,” then he leant back down, his eyes catching Key’s for a moment, pupils looking so dark and wild, before he closed his eyes and reacquainted himself with the feeling of Key’s smooth lips on his. Key could feel himself smile involuntarily against the hurried kisses Jonghyun was planting on his lips and neck.
They continued like this for five, ten minutes, and then Key, always the practical one, realised how long they had been there and shifted, trying to get off the bed. Another minute and they were going to be late. Besides, he was still unsure what this all meant. But Jonghyun’s hands cuffed Key’s wrists forcefully to the bed. Jonghyun breathed softly and desperately into Key’s mouth, his lower lip still resting delicately on Key’s, “Please don’t wake up yet.”
One look at Jonghyun’s eyes, so full of emotions that Key thought he had only known, and he relented, his body slamming back down onto the bed, his hands slipping up under the elastic fabric of Jonghyun’s t-shirt and up his muscular lower back as their lips locked once more, all in a single breath.
Jonghyun was right. He didn’t need to wake up just yet. Because he was living in the perfect dream.
