I think you really took that lesson to heart, that your parents taught you. I don't remember you ever accepting immediately that what someone said is fact, and I have never heard you repeat rumors or speculations of someone else based on things you heard. You have always formed your own opinion only after you have gathered enough information to have an educated opinion. I admire you for that.
"Politics is negotiation, if you elect people who refuse to negotiate with people who they disagree with, nothing will ever get done!" I might steal that quote from you. It is so very true and yet so many people can't see it.
