Uncertainty

“House, are you really sure about this?”

House looked up from the magazine on his desk. “Why do you care so much?”

Wilson sighed, then he walked two steps closer to House’s desk.

“House, are you really sure? Do you have any idea what you’re getting yourself into?”

House reached for his cane. “Again, you didn’t answer my question, why do you care so much?”

Wilson stared at the floor. House stared at Wilson.

“House….” Wilson started to answer, but then he stopped, and took a deep breath, and met House’s stare.

“I’m a big boy, Wilson” House said. “Maybe you should find someone else to obsess over now. How about Chase? He could use you now.”

Wilson sighed again, then he took one more step towards House’s desk, but he stopped, and turned around. He looked down at the floor again, his shoulders caved in, and he let out one more sigh.

He walked out of House’s office without saying another words. He walked as quickly as he could back to his own office, almost bumping into Chase along the way. Chase turned around and stared at him.

“Hey Wilson, you okay?”

Wilson kept on walking.

He made it to his office, and locked the door. He sat down at the desk, and pushed the big pile of paperwork aside. He knocked over his coffee cup in the process, the spilled coffee made a small puddle on his desk.

Wilson leaned back in his chair, and closed his eyes. Then the phone rang. He jumped and opened his eyes, and looked at the number that was calling him.

It was Sam. He let the phone ring and ring, then it stopped, and it was all quiet again. Quiet except for the pounding in his head, that had been going on all day.

Wilson opened the drawer in his desk and took out the bottle of pills. He opened it and let three pills spill out into his hand. He stared at them, then he put them in his mouth. He reached for the coffee cup, but it was empty now, of course.

He swallowed hard, to get the pills to go down, but it hurt, cause of the huge lump in his throat.

“Hey Wilson, open up. Why did you lock the door?” House yelled, pounding hard on the door.

Wilson sat there, silent. Then he stood up and slowly walked to the door.

He opened it.

“Why did you lock the door?” House repeated.

Wilson looked at House, but he didn’t say anything.

“I’m hungry, isn’t it time for your lunch?” House asked.

Wilson shook his head, then he almost smiled. He took his lab coat off, and threw it on the chair.

He followed House down the hallway, but the pills were still stuck on the lump in his throat, and the uncertainty followed him, close behind.
