30 Days of Christopher Eccleston

29. First and last CE-related item you bought

First: I think I ordered "Strumpet" and "The Second Coming" at the same time.

Last: "Anchoress", which I finished watching last night and which is doing a number on my head.

Anchoress is an amazing piece, one of my top favorites, but I often kind of forget about it because it usually goes unmentioned. To me it is one of Chris's quintessential works, where he plays a really unsympathetic man with complete devotion to his unsympathetic beliefs and priorities. I am utterly convinced of that character. I love how the filmmakers incorporate overtly feminist ideas while keeping the story realistic for its time... and then end the film with an amazing fantasia that diverges somewhat from historical fact (as far as we know).

It's kind of shocking how beautiful he is in that stark black and white. I eagerly await your review!! :)

I think I need to process it some more first. And maybe watch it another time or six. But yeah, it's amazing.

And yes, he's beautiful, but decidedly unsexy, which is fitting for the character. There is not a trace of sensuality in him in this movie. It amazes me how he can turn it on and off like that.

'The Anchoress' is one of my favorites too. I love the beauty of the black & white and the quiet intimacy that inhabits so much of the film. So many of the characters have their own agendas which are in opposition to everyone else's. When I first watched the film, I had no idea what to expect and so was blown away by the whole thing. CE's performance is magnetic, as usual. He has an innate ability to make himself into whatever character he is playing. He becomes the character and you believe it. I suppose that is what the experts call acting...real acting...honest to goodness acting.

(aargh LJ just ate my response - trying to remember what I said)

Sometimes I feel funny about the amount of time I spend talking about how sexy he is, compared to the amount I spend talking about what a good actor he is. But I don't think I would have noticed his sexiness if he wasn't such a good actor and made me want to watch him more and more.

I literally had to stop watching "Anchoress" halfway through because it was so intense. Everybody in it is great, and pretty much every camera shot is a work of art.

Did you notice that Blon Fel Fotch Slitheen was in it?

I love seeing familiar faces in UK projects. My sisters and I joke that there are only a limited number of actors in the UK and so they need to be recycled over and over again.

Were you able to finish it yet?

Yes, I did finish it. I think it's one I'm going to watch many many times in the future.

Have you watched Hillsborough yet? It's sooooo sad. I've only watched it once (on YouTube), but I really should buy it. I remember hearing about the stadium deaths when they happened, but I wasn't aware of the extent to which the authorities tried to discredit the victims, etc.
