Mister Smith could feel his wife's sudden melancholy as if it were a tangible thing. Excusing himself from the main temple, he hurried to through the garden to their chambers.
Aille was sitting on the edge of the bed, her head bowed. The babies were napping in their cribs, sweetly sleeping and apparently unaware of their mother's distress.
"Aille?" He knelt on the floor before her and took her hands in his. "What's wrong, muileach? Why are you so sad?"
Looking up at him, violet eyes filled with tears that threatoned to fall, "Oh Smith..." Flinging her arms around his neck, she held on tight and cried softly.
"I..." a shuttering breath, "I was watching them sleep... and I was thinking..." sniffling "about you and me... and watching them grow... and how you almost didn't get a chance too... and then how at one time you didn't..." why did it still make her heart break? He was here. "I'm so sorry I couldn't stop them... I didn't know... I would have fought beside you..."
