The most amazing thing that an absolute stranger did for me actually originated from Livejournal. I was a member of a Terry Pratchett group, and a girl there posted that she bought a couple of his books, but found that she already had one of those, so offered to give it free (shipment paid!) to one lucky person! I was in London then, she was in the US, so I replied that I'd love to have it, but probably wouldn't because of the postage. She emailed me asking for my address, and a couple of days later, lo and behold, I got the book!
I later went through her blog, and found that she had asked for the addresses of a couple of people, and have always wondered whether she actually bought more books to give to all. Needless to say, I treasure that book a hell lot.
