I am borrowing The Ask and the Answer off the friend who bought me the first book.
I really love Priviledge of the Sword - although am not familiar with Ellen Kushner's other work. Technically PotS is a sequel to Swordspoint, which I haven't read. Very interesting setting and lots of awesome female characters.
I've read On the Road and The Dharma bums and while both amazingly written, the lack of female characters who aren't just there for sex is infuriating. It seems to be the case with a lot of beat lit.
Sex and dishes. It's very depressing and contributed to my intense dislike of Jack Kerouac when I studied him in third year. The Beat generation in general is one of those movements which seems to talk about how hard it is to be white and male, which is a bit boring to be honest.

"Sweeney Todd" = awesome. I have, sadly, only seen the movie but I love the songs. Would love to see it on stage one day.
