The sun had barely started to rise, but Michael was already making his way out of bed as Alena was starting to move towards him in her sleep.
Maybe it was the pressure of the holidays, or maybe it was the fact that he was starting to realize that he wasn't willing to be in a relationship no matter how loose it was, but the idea of staying in bed until some hour in the morning was unappealing to him. Lately things between them had started to become strained, but neither of them did much about it because the relationship wasn't supposed to be a big deal. They were just friends who were sleeping together from time to time. They were friends who worked together again, no matter how many times Michael had claimed that he'd only work for Alena and for Marc, her boss, just once. They were friends who, at one point in their life, had shared a strong relationship with each other, so it made their sleeping together a lot easier and comfortable than just sleeping with some random person he had no connection with. Their relationship wasn't exactly a romantic one, and they were each okay with that.
Or, at least, that's what he had figured before.
As he buttoned up his shirt once his jeans were on, Michael realized he was starting to get tired of this. Not because he wanted more, but because it just seemed pointless. They worked together, and they slept together, but this wasn't what he wanted. Since he couldn't have what he wanted, though, this had seemed like an alternative, and now he was starting to realize he had been wrong. Again. With a sigh, he put on his shoes and idly wondered when he'd stop getting things wrong. It was part of life to make mistakes, but he had made enough mistakes to last a lifetime, hadn't he?
A sudden sigh caused him to turn to the bed then, only to find Alena already awake and watching him. "You're sneaking off already?"
He shrugged, picking up his coat from the floor. "I have a few things to do. You should go back to sleep, it's still early."
"Fine," she responded with an exaggerated sigh, then waved as he started to head towards the door. "I'll call you later. Enjoy the sunrise for me?"
Stopping by the door, Michael smiled slightly at her and nodded. "Sure thing. Consider it done." Even with all the things he had been thinking earlier, about how their relationship needed to be stopped, he walked over to her and kissed her before leaving. He had a sunrise to enjoy during his drive home.
