Every muscle in Hermione's body tensed as she heard another voice aggressively address the dragon. Painfully aware of the fact that she was shaking, she turned her head to look, having not recognized Harry or Ron's voice. They were the only two who might have followed her out here, with the exception of Hagrid, so other than that, she had no idea who was coming to her rescue ( ... )

The dragon's focus was intense, it's dark eyes narrowed on Sokka and his boar as they moved farther and farther away, one slow step at a time. It snorted, pawed viciously at the frozen earth, and sent a small cascade of dirt down the steep incline.

Sokka swallowed and tried to be a little louder this time. "I said, hey UGLY, I've got a real easy snack for you!" The dragon snapped at the air and the sound made the hair on Sokka's neck stand on end. "Come and get it!" He called out, and as he backed away again, he quickened his pace some, hoping the movement would draw the dragon away from the ledge ( ... )

Hermione's face as the boy taunted the dragon was one of aghast horror. True, the dragon didn't understand English, but she was certain it could recognize a hostile tone, and this boy was certainly taking one with it. If he wasn't careful....

She gasped and staggered back at the new flames, the hellish light from them casting an eerie glow around her. And then-... there! Rolling down the incline as though making its way back to her! Her wand was almost within reach, and she could get to it... except that it stopped right by the dragon's swinging tail.

She looked back at the boy whose name was on the tip of her tongue, but she knew that speaking would only attract the dragon's attention. She mouthed out, "My wand," and turned her attention back to the bit of wood dangerously close to the tail. If the dragon took just a few steps back... well, she certainly didn't have the means to get a new wand anytime soon, and she needed her wand. If not for protection, then certainly for her exams ( ... )

And the Pendulum Swings Back and Forth... angle_on_it July 1 2011, 07:13:04 UTC
Time, as it was apt to do, passed at the same rate, despite its perceived relativity. Break had come and it was an opportunity for students to get out for a bit and, depending on their station, relax (if the situation called for it.) For non-students, like Sokka, break was just another string of days, the only marked difference being how the time was spent ( ... )

Things always had a way of changing, and Hermione was glad for it. Especially considering her awful trip home (having to sit in a compartment with Neville and Luna wasn't so bad, but being unable to talk to Harry because she was afraid of catching Ron snogging with Lavender across from the other boy was definitely enough to make her feel anxious). She had already told her parents that she would be spending Christmas with the Weasleys, but after her falling out with Ron, she hadn't managed to get in touch with them to tell her of her change of plans before they were already gone to Aspen for their ski holiday. Usually, they would be back by Christmas, as they didn't like spending the New Year abroad, but for now, Hermione was confined to loneliness.

As such, she ran out of things to do quickly once she'd ready her last new book. She didn't have a Floo network set up in her house, so she couldn't well just call up one of her magical friends, and she had no Muggle friends; sending an owl would take too long, and she was bored nowSo, ( ... )

Sokka stopped in the middle of a pen stoke, and looked long at the paper. It had been a while since he'd heard that voice, and while it took him no time to place it, he still worried it might be the bearer of bad news about his sister. Thankfully, when he lifted his head, he saw a smile, which immediately put him at ease. "I'm okay, how are you, Hermione?"

He nudged out a chair at his table with his foot and nodded his head toward it, figuring she might take a seat. It was a request, not a demand, though, so Sokka didn't make mention of it verbally.

Hermione had intended to simply pass through after exchanging greetings with Sokka, but as he pulled out the chair and she didn't really have anywhere to be anyway, she smiled at him and sat down, setting her bag on her lap.

"I'm all right," she replied. Her injured hand began to itch, and she held it up to show just a few small, light pink patches, hardly noticeable at all unless one knew to look for them. At worst, it looked like a fading sunburn. "The hand is coming along well, and the last I saw her about them, Madam Pomfrey said it wouldn't scar or anything. It already feels like the dragon attack had been ages ago."

Curiously, she asked, "Did they ever figure out how it got in the forest, do you know?"

Certainly, Hermione couldn't have known the pendant she'd taken home as a token was more than just a token. The small piece of Water Tribe craftsmanship had been painstakingly hand carved from a small piece of Wulrus-Yak tusk hundreds of years previous. The enchantment had come much, much later, of course.

Cursed with the effects of Midnight Sun Madness, the small tribal pendant, having been activated at the small store by Sokka and passed off to Hermione, laid dormant for months, awaiting the vernal equinox. Come spring, it cast its spell over its owner, forcing Granger to perceive a constant daylight, no matter the hour.

The only clue to the odd occurrence was the soft blue glow emitting from the pendant (much harder to see in the daylight than it would have ever been at night.) Perhaps it would be evidence enough to point Hermione in the right direction when placing her blame (or alternately, when seeking out a solution where magic is likely to fail.)

With springtime came exam time, and so it was little wonder that Hermione was more than a bit stressed. Things with Ron were beginning to patch up, especially since his near-death experience on his birthday, and Harry finally seemed to be getting just a little more wary about using the Half-Blood Prince's book. Oh, he still used it, of course, much to her chagrin, but she had other things to worry about ( ... )

Hermione was relieved to find Sokka without too much trouble, though really, it felt like the closer she got to figuring this mess out, the worse it got. Her eyes hurt from the brightness of the outdoors, and shielding them often led to her bumping into walls or people, which garnered some strange looks. She was glad to have come across Sokka without bumping into Ron or Harry, since she didn't want to give them any reason to worry.

Stepping into his quarters, Hermione blinked as she tried to look around, but it didn't help any. Closing her eyes, she pinched the bridge of her nose, trying not to groan.

"Katara's fine," she told him, since that seemed to be the most important point to him right now. "I just... I have a problem."

Fishing into the pocket of her robes, she eventually withdrew the medallion, which was still glowing faintly. "Do you remember this?" she asked, holding it out to him. "What does it mean to you?"

Sokka had wasted no time upon hearing there was another bout of major trouble. The unrest around had been enough to alert him something had happened, but the excessive nature of it made him worry just how serious it was. Asking around yielded immediate results, and as soon as he heard it was a Weasley, Sokka knew that Hermione would be involved.

He couldn't get close enough to see her until late, late in the evening. By then, he imagined she was tired and feeling a bit like withdrawing from the public, so in anticipation, he'd brought her some food (of the portable variety) and he's convinced himself to leave her be if she looks to want to spend her time away from anyone at all. Slipping into the waiting area, he tries his best to look as unobtrusive as possible.

Even though it was late in the evening and Hermione hadn't gotten any of her studying done or ate dinner or any such thing, the only reason she took it to mind to leave Ron's side was because Madame Pomfrey firmly kicked her out of his room. He needed rest, the matron told her, and there was no way he was going to get it with her hovering above his head like that. Personally, Hermione thought that was ridiculous, as all Ron was doing was sleeping, but as Madame Pomfrey could be rather frightening when she decided to be stern, she decided that it was best to make a quiet retreat and leave it at that.

When she laid eyes on Sokka, she blinked for a few moments, not knowing what he was doing here. "Sokka-...." Deciding that perhaps Sokka was simply friends with someone else being tended to, Hermione approached him, looking down at him with eyes lined red from hours of fretful crying. "Are you all right?"

The sight of her stirred his heart in his chest but he swallowed it down almost immediately. "Yeah, I'm fine," he assured her, reaching a hand out to touch her arm. He cradled the food awkwardly. "I heard what happened and I was worried about you." Not to mention a lot of other people. Who thought it was all right to poison people? Sokka ran a hand down his face and glanced back over his shoulder at the few people mingling about.

Turning back to Granger, he let's out a sigh, his eyebrows drawing together in concern. "I hope your friend's all right." He didn't really socialize with Ron, but he'd been around long enough to know Ron was a good guy and didn't deserve so much trouble. It was a shame people could be so messed up and feel justified in their own actions.

Struck by his response, Hermione blinks for a few moments, her face heating up a little. Her? He heard what happened to Ron and he was concerned about her? "Oh, Sokka," she murmured, sounding both gratified and little heartbroken. "That's so sweet."

She took a deep breath, looking down at the floor between them. "He should be fine. He'll be ill for a couple of days, but Madame Pomfrey said that he'll come out of it fairly quickly, thanks to the bezoar Harry had given him. I just-... I've been so worried. I haven't been... Ron and I haven't been on the best of terms for a few weeks, and now...."
