Skinny's used to less than ideal sleeping conditions. Hell, it's pretty much a way of life in the military, and the things he's learned to sleep through could fill a book. After the evening, the first place I had gone was nowhere. I was perfectly content to enjoy a good lie-in. The second place I went happened to be Skinny's door to see if I couldn't beg myself an ounce of forgiveness for the night before.

He hadn't been there and it feels like a wild goose chase until I do see a glimpse of him out in the trees. "Skinny!" I call out to him, jogging to try and catch up. "Skinny, wait!"

Skinny turns, maybe slows down a touch, but he doesn't stop walking.

"Hey, Web," he calls back, and turns back toward the trail. "Not here to give me another lecture, are you?"

I feel a flash of guilt, wondering if that's some snipe of a way to push at me after last night, but I catch up to him with sure steps, breathless by the time I get there. "No," I gasp out. "To apologize." A conciliatory smile feels weak, as though I should be able to offer more, but the truth is, I don't know how this is going to play out.

He snorts, and keeps his eyes trained forward. "Now why exactly would you want to do that?"

The hill is getting steeper, and it's humid enough to be home -- he can't pretend away other things, though. He keeps trudging.
