I will most happily reimburse you for the battery charger. I know I'll use it on my next trip, so it's totally worthwhile. Sorry about the headset and sim card, but having a good headset can be useful.
Sorry your day wasn't the greatest. Some of that might be jet lag. And sore feet. A good night sleep might do you a world of good.
Buck up, and enjoy your beer. Maybe you'll find someone friendly to converse with. If all else fails, get baked. When will you have a better opportunity?
Foreign countries are difficult, particularly when you want to be off the beaten track (where of course fewer people speak your language, or want to) but you have to love not understanding stuff. It's exciting that you're on this trip, and interesting to read what you have to say! Just try to get away from your regular routine - you're away from the US, so dont bother so much with email and phones and all that - love being gone for a bit! :)
And hard as it is, try to ignore the exchange rate and the prices. It's just a different world there, and they have different prices.
A word about the cheese for my own notes. It was a wheel of gouda labeled "Oud Snijdbare." The designations on it mean that it is old (Oud) and has a slightly higher water content than an official "hard" cheese (Snijdbare, which translates via Google to "cutting pressure" -- don't know what that actually means).
