Methinks JMS needs to study a little history. We've been arguing about a few of those topics for the last 2000 years, let alone the last 50. We were arguing about most of those topics in one form or another back in the 1890s--and the ones that we weren't arguing about, represent 20th century progress. Can't argue about nuclear weapons before they exist, after all.
Future Shock is a thing, and society is still playing catch-up. Western culture is still assimilating the changes brought about in the 19th century, let alone those from the 20th.
Also, the 21st century Internet gives a lot more visibility to reactionary idiots than earlier technologies did.
