After reading my textbook, I started thinking about where exactly memory is stored in the brain...or if that's even a fact. I know memory isn't a tangible thing. I also learned in class about the different areas that are involved in memory and cognitive processes. Yet, I can't help but wonder, "how is this all possible?" I mean, if you take someone ( Read more... )

Scientifically......and only scientifically...

...ASSUMING in the future brain transplants would be possible, memories would in my opinion still remain in the transplanted brain. according to SCIENCE, memories are made when connections between nerve cells are strengthened over time. These connections become stronger as a person recalls a memory more and more. Also, the stronger the connection the more deeply imprinted the memory is on the brain. Back to the topic of a transplant, moving a whole intact brain from one head to another would not destroy these connections, especially the stronger ones. Therefore, the memories remain.

Now, if you add all these theoretical philosophies to the mix (i.e. religion, the idea of a soul), the scientific explanation becomes quite shady. So what you need to ask yourself now is....are you going to believe what humankind has proven to itself or what you believe the truth to be from religion or what not?

good point. now THIS answered my question...or at least to some extent. i agree with your opinion.

and as for now, i'm going to believe what i feel is the truth based on my religious, or less scientific, views. after all, if science doesn't have the answers quite yet, why trust in them? if in the future brain transplants become possible, then i will re-evaluate my views.

thanks, but who are you? haha
