There are mysterious, unspoken secrets on a summoner’s pilgrimage.  Secrets that would break apart the future of pilgrimages in one whispered sentence.  Secrets that would mean there would be no female summoners ever again, for they are more sensitive to the ordeals of the journey.

What are these challenging ordeals that no amount of black or white magic can overcome, you ask?  Well, it’s rather simple and obvious, really.  In two words: the stink.

No one ever told Yuna that having Wakka for a guardian would provide a constant stench of body odour in the times between travel agencies.  One might have thought she would also have realised that Kimahri would contribute a nice wet cat smell, but one would have been wrong.  One would, in fact, have been correct in thinking Yuna was a bit too naïve for her own good.

Upon setting out, Wakka managed to either go for a swim or have a bath every day.  Unfortunately, as soon as they left Luca, travel agencies were few and far between.  Fortunately, as Auron was dead and Tidus was a dream, neither of them smelt and so Yuna spent her time walking with them.  It was a pity that Auron smelt oddly of decomposing bodies and Tidus smelt oddly of perfume…

Kimahri, when dry, was a lovely big purple hug on legs.  Kimahri, when wet, was a huge wet and smelly purple monster.  Kimahri, having looked after Yuna since she was seven, was well able to tell when she needed a hug.  But when the weather was rainy and depressing and she could do with a big furry cuddle, being squeezed tight by a sodden smelly ball of fur was unpleasant to say the least.

Yuna’s father, Lord Braska, had probably never cared if his guardians stank.  But then he was a man and therefore would have been rather smelly himself, and couldn’t have yelled at Auron and Jecht without being highly hypocritical.

It was hard, Yuna mused, for one’s pilgrimage to be full of laughter when one was steadily being gassed by one’s own guardians…
