She was disturbed by a knock on the door. Plastering a falsely pleasant look on her face - Nuriko wasn’t even going to see it coming - she opened it, then stared in surprise.
“Hi Hoto - I mean, your majesty,” Miaka said, grinning. Hotohori nodded, the movement causing his dark hair to fall forward to obscure his eye; he shook it back thoughtlessly, and Miaka tried not to drool openly.
“Would you accompany me on a walk?” the emperor requested.
“Sure!” Miaka exclaimed, and slipped her arm through his. Nuriko was going to be so furious…
Hotohori led her to a balcony overlooking the city. Miaka leant forwards, trying to take in the whole view. Beyond the buildings of the city, she could see fields of rice and cattle; amazed, she tried to take in the view.
“I’ve never been in the middle of a city and been able to see the countryside at the same time,” she said, looking to see where the nearest baker was.
“Do you like it?” Hotohori asked. Miaka smiled and nodded. He’s so gorgeous…
“It’s great! I’ve only been outside of Tokyo a few times, and the city is so different to Hong Nan anyway…” Miaka started laughing. Hotohori looked at her oddly, wondering what was so funny; Miaka realised she was acting weirdly and tried to subdue the laughter. “I was about to say, ‘it’s like another world’ and then I realised that this is another world,” she explained. Hotohori nodded, a sad look flashing across his face before it vanished.
“Do you want to return to your world?” he asked.
“Well, I have to take my exams to get into Jonan, and my mum is going to be worried because I’ve been gone so long… it’d be nice to stay here, though,” Miaka said. Hotohori nodded, apparently satisfied with her answer.
“Would you stay, if I gave you a good reason to?” he asked. Miaka nodded.
“I guess… I like being the Priestess,” she said. “What’s the reason?”
Hotohori tilted her chin up so she was staring into his eyes. He was close - and then he was kissing her, and Miaka couldn’t think of anything but him.
“You will stay,” Hotohori said softly. It wasn’t a request, but neither was it an order. It was simply a statement of something they both knew. Miaka nodded, blushing. That wasn’t the first time Hotohori had come on to her - only the previous night, he’d said that he would make her his Empress - but that wasn’t the same as her first real kiss…
Miaka couldn’t wait to tell Nuriko. It would serve the woman right for slapping Miaka after she found Hotohori in her room. Nuriko had said that Hotohori was hers. Miaka was about to tell her just how wrong she was.
