so i'm pissed off because eating tuna will probably fuck me and my future unborn children up, or at least make us suffer from memory loss and defficient motor skills ( Read more... )

well, i have a tough time eating healthy, i pretty much abhor all vegetables besides salads, and i just eat a lot of shit most of the time. tuna is something that has a lot of protein, is low in fat and i actually like to eat. it's just a shame that because of factors beyond my control that something that's supposed to be really healthy for you is turning out to be extremely harmful (i'm referring to the high mercury levels in fish).

hmm, maybe you could try to find organic tuna (if such a thing exists) at like whole foods or whatever health food store you guys have in washington. apparently, salt water fish in general are really dangerous for consumption.

yes, it's a really big problem with the large wild fish (shark, swordfish and tuna being the biggest ones). they could probably sell farm grown tuna, but farmed fish brings about a whole other set of problems, and i've only heard of farm grown salmon.

part of the study i was reading when i found out about all of this included testing some cans of tuna that came from the shelves of whole foods. so i think it's just pretty much unavoidable. and a complete side note: whole foods is awesome.

oh, 1/3 of all tuna sold in cans is white tuna and white tuna has dangerously high levels of mercury. pregnant and nursing mothers and very young children are urged to not eat tuna because it has diar affects on the developing fetus and children in regard to motor skills and memory.

Oh...well...damn.
Do they even sell non-white tuna? Like at the butcher or something, could you go pick up a pound of non-white tuna? And then is it brown tuna? Or pink?

...I'm sorry. I don't really think you're "All Knowing Tuna" lady, I just have a lot of questions about tuna.

i am not exactly sure what other kinds of tuna there are. all i know is that the most popular large salt water fish, including shark, swordfish and tuna, are the ones with the biggest problems, because the mercury accumulates through big fish eating smaller fish, and then even bigger fish eating the big fish and so on and so forth. mercury occurs naturally in fish, but it's become more and more of a problem with the burning of FOSSIL FUELS. damnit.

go to google and type in tuna and mercury. you'll get tons of hits and be able to read all about it!
