“Excuse me.”
Jooyeon turned her attention away from her locker. A tall, pretty girl with long black hair stood in front of her, an intimidating look on her face. Behind her were two other girls with haughty expressions.
“Yes?” Jooyeon asked politely.
“You’re Park Jooyeon, right?” the girl asked.
“Yes. Can I help you with anything?” Jooyeon wanted to know.
“As a matter of fact, there is something you can help me with,” the girl went on. “I’m Lee Eunhye. If you don’t know who I am, do some research. But I’m going to tell you right now: stay away from Hyukjae and the rest of them.”
“Oh, I’m sorry,” Jooyeon apologized, her eyes widening. “Are you his girlfriend?”
“You could say that,” Eunhye said with a smirk. The other girls chuckled. “I really hate it when girls hang around him. So can I count on you?”
“Um,” Jooyeon hesitated. “I’m not doing anything wrong. We’re just friends.”
“You’re not his friend,” Eunhye retorted.
“But, um, how come I’ve never seen you two together before?” Jooyeon asked.
This caught Eunhye off-guard, but she immediately regained her composure. “We’re keeping a low profile, but I still don’t like you hanging around him. Nor Donghae.”
“Donghae, too?” Jooyeon asked in confusion.
“Just stay away from them, freak!” Eunhye said, losing her patience. “I’ll be watching you.” Without another word, she and her minions walked away.

“Taeng,” Jooyeon began as they sat on the bleachers, watching the boys’ regular afternoon game.
“Hmm?” Taeyeon asked, lifting her chin from her hand and turning to look at her.
“Do the boys have girlfriends?” Jooyeon asked.
Taeyeon smiled. “Those boys don’t have girlfriends. They date.” When Jooyeon looked at her curiously, she clarified, “They don’t go steady with a specific girl.”
“Oh,” Jooyeon responded. “Do dates have a right to get mad when other girls hang around their date?”
“Why are you asking all this?” Taeyeon asked.
“Nothing,” Jooyeon said, smiling. She slung her bag on her shoulder and stood up. “I’ll see you at home.”
“What, you’re not staying?” Taeyeon asked, surprised. They always watched the boys play basketball, whether for varsity practice or not.
“I have some research to do and I’m tired,” Jooyeon explained.
“We’re eating out later,” Taeyeon reminded her.
“I’ll pass for today,” Jooyeon said. She went down the bleachers and started for the door.
“Are you leaving already?” Heechul, who was standing by the sidelines, asked.
“Library first then home,” she said.
“So you’re not coming with us later?” Heechul went on. She shook her head, smiling.
“Why not?” Shindong, who overheard, asked.
“Research and homework,” she said. “I’ll go next time.” Shindong pouted and turned to call the others. But she stopped him. “Don’t tell them,” she pleaded. “They’ll just make me stay and then I won’t be able to say no.”
“So are you saying we don’t have the ability to make you stay?” Heechul asked, affronted.
She laughed. “I didn’t mean it that way.”
“That’s exactly what you meant,” Heechul insisted, crossing his arms on his chest.
“Oppa,” she said, pouting a bit.
“How about a hug before you leave then?” Heechul said, opening his arms.
“How about a handshake?” she suggested, lifting her hand towards him.
“Fine,” Heechul said, shaking it. When she was about to let go, he continued clasping her hand and lifted it to his lips, kissing it.
“Ya!” Shindong yelled. “What was that?” Kyuhyun and Hankyung, who were nearby, heard this and went over.
“Oppa,” Jooyeon said, blushing.
“What’s going on here?” Hankyung asked as Jooyeon untangled her hand from Heechul’s.
“Nothing,” Jooyeon said. “I was just leaving. See you guys!”
“Where are you going?” Kyuhyun demanded. “I thought you came to watch us play.”
“Library,” she said, growing tired of explaining.
“Jooyeon, where are you going?” Hyukjae, running towards them after he saw Jooyeon with her bag, asked.
At that moment, a couple of girls walked in the gym and sat on the upper part of the bleachers, the same girls who talked to Jooyeon that morning. Eunhye eyed her and raised an eyebrow.
“I really have to go,” Jooyeon said once she broke eye contact with her. “I’ll see you guys tomorrow.” Without listening to what they were saying, she hurriedly walked away, leaving the gym.
“Aish that girl,” Hyukjae commented.
Kyuhyun looked up at the bleachers. Eunhye smiled and waved at him flirtatiously.

Jooyeon did go to the library, but only to borrow some books, deciding to do research at home. She wasn’t really sure why she let Eunhye get to her. She was suspicious about her so-called relationship with Hyukjae, but she was new. It wouldn’t do for her to cause any trouble. She could’ve asked Taeyeon, but that would mean that she had some sort of interest in the boys, which she didn’t, although it was very hard to ignore the fact that they all had some sort of charm.
Hyukjae. Even without any vested interest in the matter, she wished that he really wasn’t going out with that Eunhye. He deserved so much better, someone who really cared about him and not just because he was good-looking or a kingka or anything like that. It wasn’t hard to care for Hyukjae. It was actually too easy.
As she walked home, five books in hand, her thoughts wandered to Kyuhyun. She couldn’t figure him out. It was so hard to believe that someone who had a jerk-like attitude would be friends with seven other boys, who seemed like the complete opposite. She wondered what bonded them together, aside from gaming, basketball and soccer. She smiled a little. Knowing the boys, those things were probably enough to bond them.
Smiling, she truly felt joy at the thought that they chose her to be one of their friends. It didn’t seem like a normal thing for them to include people in their group. But maybe the fact that she was Taeyeon’s best friend was a big factor in this inclusion. Whatever the reason was, she was happy with it. She would never have thought that her stay in Seoul would be so enjoyable and that she would gain so many friends. Guy friends. Who would’ve thought?
She was so lost in her thoughts that she didn’t realize that someone was following her.
“Excuse me.”
Jooyeon jumped, making some of the books she was carrying fall from her grasp. As she picked them up, the guy who was following her helped her pick them up.
“Thanks,” Jooyeon said, straightening up. She looked at him.
“Sorry about that,” he said.
“You’re in my Math class, right?” she asked, trying to place him. He was a bit taller than her and had short black hair.
“Yeah,” he said, smiling. “I’m Seungho.”
“Jooyeon,” she said, smiling back. “Do you live this way too?”
“Yeah,” Seungho answered with a nod. “I’ve seen you walk this way everyday.”
She frowned. “I’m sorry, I wasn’t-.”
“I understand. You were with your friends,” he said dismissively. He noticed her books. “Let me help you with your books.”
Warning bells sounded off in Jooyeon’s head. With a smile, she politely declined. But he kept on insisting, so she finally agreed.
“Do you understand anything that our math teacher discusses in class?” Seungho then asked, shaking his head. Jooyeon chuckled. “Sometimes I really can’t understand a thing.”
“You should take Soobin up on her offer of tutoring,” Jooyeon suggested. Soobin was their resident math nerd.
Suengho smiled sheepishly. “I was hoping you could tutor me.” He shyly looked at her.
This made Jooyeon uncomfortable. They just met and here he was offering that she tutor him. “I’m really not that good,” she told him. “So I won’t be of much help.”
“Then maybe we can study together,” he offered, grinning.
“We’ll see,” she vaguely replied.
Jooyeon got her phone out of her bag, wanting to call one of the boys when she remembered that she didn’t have any of their numbers. She called Taeyeon instead. But her line was busy. Sighing, she put it back on her bag. She was just going to have to endure it.
“You’re Kim Taeyeon’s best friend, right?” Seungho went on, clutching onto her books.
“Yeah,” she confirmed. “How’d you know?”
“Oh it’s all over school,” he told her with a wide smile. “I’m really glad I got the chance to meet you. My friends are going to be jealous when they find out that we’re friends.”
Friends? She forced a smile. “Right,” she said.
“So you came from Jeonju, right?” he proceeded.
They weren’t near the apartment yet, but Jooyeon stopped walking and turned to him, her arms stretched to get her books. “Where do you live, Seungho?” she asked politely, getting her books from him even though he resisted.
“Just nearby,” he loosely answered.
“Well, I’m near here so I’ll see you tomorrow then,” she nicely said. “Thank you for walking with me!”
“I can walk you to your door,” he persisted.
“It’s okay, thank you,” she insisted politely with a smile. She turned to go.
“I hope I can walk with you again next time, Jooyeon,” he said.
Not wanting to promise anything and give false hope, she merely smiled. “See you in school.”
Jooyeon started walking, hoping that Seungho would walk towards wherever his house was as well. When she turned back, she saw him still standing there, watching her. She closed her eyes and wished that she was just being paranoid. As discreetly as she could, she looked back again. Still there. Was he going to watch her the whole way? At that moment, her phone rang. She immediately answered the call.
It was Donghae.
“Oppa,” she practically screamed.
“Hey!” He paused for a second. “Is everything okay?”
“Yeah,” she lied. “I just… um, are you guys still in school?”
“We’re just about to leave. I just called to ask if you’re sure you didn’t want to join us for dinner.”
Jooyeon glanced behind her and saw Seungho still standing there, looking at her.
“Jooyeon? You still there?”
“Oppa,” she quietly said. “Can you wait for me? I think I want to go with you guys instead. I’ll go back to school.”
“Jooyeon, what’s wrong?” She could hear Hyukjae’s, Heechul’s and Kangin’s voices in the background, all wondering what was going on.
“Nothing,” she lied, trying to sound bright. “Just… wait for me, okay?”
Once she hung up, she turned around and started on the way back to school. When Seungho saw her, he approached her again.
“Where are you going?” he asked, falling into step beside her.
“I forgot something in school,” she told him, smiling a little. “I decided to go back for it.”
“Ah,” he said, nodding. “Here let me help you with your books.”
“It’s fine, really,” she declined, shaking her head. “Thank you.”
Suengho shrugged. “So what did you forget?”
“Just some of my notes and stuff,” she replied. “I need them for my research so…”
“What’s your research about?” he asked.
“It’s for Literature class,” she told him. “Are you sure you’re going back to school with me? Don’t you have to go home?”
“I’m fine,” he said. “I don’t have homework, anyway. I’d rather talk to you.” He smiled at her.
Soon, to Jooyeon’s relief, they reached Neulparan. When they were at the gate, she turned to him and thanked him again for walking with her.
“Do you need help with anything?” he then asked. “I can wait for you then walk you back home if you want.”
She shook her head. “No, I might take a while. I might also do some research in the library instead. You go ahead.”
“Are you sure? I can stay with you in the library,” he persisted.
“Seungho, I really appreciate it, but I’ll be okay by myself,” she firmly said.
He nodded and smiled. “Okay. See you tomorrow then.” He smiled at her again and walked away.
Jooyeon sighed in relief as she entered the school, hurrying towards the building. She was halfway there when Donghae walked out of the building.
“Oppa,” she said, smiling and feeling even more relieved. She felt so happy so see him.
“Are you okay?” he asked, carrying her books and looking at her closely.
“Fine,” she chirped brightly. “Where’s everyone?”
“Parking lot,” he answered.
When they reached the parking lot, Jooyeon saw Hyukjae and Kyuhyun playing around with a soccer ball, while the others looked on. Taeyeon was sitting on the hood of a black car as she talked to Siwon, who was standing beside her. Hankyung saw them first
“Hey!” Hankyung said, waving at us.
“Hi,” Jooyeon said, smiling. “Sorry I’m late.” Donghae went to his car and put her books in the trunk.
Kyuhyun shook his head. “Tsk tsk.” Jooyeon rolled her eyes at him.
“I thought you weren’t coming,” Heechul said, raising his eyebrows. “When Donghae convinces you, you say yes.” Jooyeon smiled guiltily.
Taeyeon noticed something strange about Jooyeon so she hopped off the hood and walked over to her. Putting an arm around her, she announced, “Jooyeon’s riding with me and Siwon.”
Everyone else groaned in disappointment.
