“Busy?” Hyukjae’s head popped out suddenly above the study table she was using in the library.

Jooyeon sat back, almost falling down in surprise. But Heechul was behind her to make sure she didn’t fall.

“What are you doing here?” she asked them in a loud whisper.

“We’re going gaming,” Heechul told her. “We want you to go with us.”

“But I’m studying,” she said, gesturing to the notes and books on her desk.

“You can do that next time,” Hyukjae said. “We haven’t seen you play.”

“But I…” she began.

“C’mon,” Heechul adamantly said, pulling her out of her chair, while Hyukjae closed all her notes and books and carried it.

“I have an exam in two days,” she told them.

“Just one game,” Hyukjae promised.

After seven games, they still weren’t letting her go back to her studying. They were so resolute in beating her that she almost wanted to let them win. But, she had to admit, it was fun playing and winning.

Shindong groaned as he was eliminated from the game once again. Then Hankyung slammed the keyboard when he got eliminated. And then Heechul. Kangin. Donghae. Hyukjae.

“Guys, I really need to go home,” she said, standing up and gathering her things. “See you guys tomorrow.”

“Jooyeon,” Kangin whined. “You have to teach us how to play like that.”

“Of course I will,” she promised. The boys grinned. “But not today.” Their grins fell. “I’m really sorry, but I promised omma that I’ll be home before dinner.”

“I’ll walk you home,” Hyukjae said, standing up.

After another round of goodbyes, Hyukjae and Jooyeon finally went on their way. He couldn’t contain his excitement about the way she played.

“…everyone’s really amazed when you shot that Zerg and made it explode so quickly,” he rambled. “You have really amazing skills! I hope I can be as good as you are. I can’t believe you finished the whole game.”

Her gaze snapped towards him. “Donghae oppa told you?”

“Of course he did,” he said, smiling at her. “It’s okay, really. I knew you were lying anyway.” She muttered something incoherent. This made him laugh. “You’re the easiest person to read, you know.”

“I am?” she asked.

“Yeah,” he confirmed. “You’re like see-through glass.”

“So are you,” she shot back, smiling. “Is there ever a time when you’re not happy?”

He seemed to think about it then shrugged. “I don’t know. I always feel happy.”

She chuckled. “Good for you.”

They walked in silence for a short while. It was a nice, comfortable silence. Jooyeon realized that she’d never been alone with Hyukjae before. She was almost always with Donghae. She liked being with Hyukjae. His happiness was infectious. It was always a sunny day when he was around.

“Jooyeon,” Hyukjae called her, breaking the silence.

“Yes oppa,” she said, watching her shoes brush on the cemented road.

“Were you ever going to tell us about Seungho?” he asked, looking at her. She never even told Taeyeon about him. She opened her mouth to say something, but he cut her off. “Don’t try to deny it. Donghae saw you.”

Jooyeon looked away and stared at the road. “I didn’t want to make you all needlessly worried. It was fine. He just talked a lot, that’s all.”

“That’s all? Jooyeon, you were freaked out,” he reminded her. “We could all see how scared you were.”

“There wasn’t anything to be scared about, honestly,” she played it down. “He was pretty nice.”

“I don’t know why you’re so afraid to ask for help,” he said, shaking his head. “Don’t be stubborn. You could get hurt. And don’t listen to Eunhye.” Her head shot up and she looked at him again. “She always does that to anyone who gets close to us. She’s delusional.”

It was the first time she heard him talk about anyone in such negative terms. “So you’re not her boyfriend?”

“No,” he said.

“Not even dating?” she prodded.

Hyukjae looked at her, a gummy smile forming on his face. “Are you jealous?”

“Well you did say that I was the only girl for you,” she reminded him cheekily.

Jooyeon sat down on one of the tables in the quad, rewriting her math notes. It was the only way for her to understand and remember what was discussed in class. When she didn’t rewrite them, she always had a hard time understanding her notes. She was alone because she preferred to review and study alone. It wouldn’t do to have Hyukjae cracking jokes all the time or Donghae offering to help her or Kyuhyun clacking his tongue and smirking at her. They were probably on the field, hanging out and playing soccer.

“Hi Jooyeon.” Seungho sat down across from her, smiling.

“Seungho,” Jooyeon said, startled. She smiled. “Hey.” She hadn’t talked to him outside of class since they walked home together. She thought he’d given up since he kept on trying to talk to her in class, but their seats were too far away from each other.

He leaned over and looked at what she was doing. “Ah, math.” He wrinkled his nose. “Mind if I study with you?” He brought out his books and notes.

“Not at all,” she said, shaking her head. There was no harm in studying together, right? It was weird, though. He kind of gave off this vibe that she remembered so well… Shrugging it off, she went back to her notes.

“Hey, do you remember how to get the mean?” he suddenly asked, breaking the silence. They were currently taking up basic statistics.

“Yeah, you average it,” she said. When he looked blankly at her, she explained, “You add all the numbers and divide it by how many numbers there are.”

“I think I’d better go over there so you can show me,” he said. Before she could say anything about it, he had gone over and had sat down beside her.

“It’s simple really,” she said, discreetly moving away from him as she showed him how it’s done. His face was nearly touching her shoulder, half of his body behind her.

“Can you show me another example?” he asked, his voice low.

As Jooyeon wrote down another set of numbers and started to get the mean, Seungho leaned even closer and took a whiff of her hair. She hadn’t noticed it at first, but when she felt him caressing her hair, she turned around and caught him.

“What are you doing?” she demanded, pushing him off.

He was startled for a moment. “I’m not doing anything wrong,” he said innocently. “It’s just… your hair smells really nice.” He began moving closer once more.

“Seungho-sshi!” she said, moving to stand up. But he caught her wrist.

“Everything okay here?”

Jooyeon turned and was so relieved to find that it was Kyuhyun. Seungho immediately let go of her and stood up, taking a step back. Massaging her wrist, she watched as Kyuhyun took two steps towards Seungho and grabbed his arm, dragging him away.

“Oppa,” she began.

But Kyuhyun glared at her. “Stay there.”

Jooyeon sat back down and decided to fix her things. What was going on with Seungho? She knew he was a bit strange, but she didn’t know that he was that strange. Closing her eyes, she willed herself to calm down. It wasn’t the same situation as before. It wasn’t and it will never be.

“Hey, are you okay?”

Jooyeon opened her eyes and found Kyuhyun sitting beside her, looking closely at her. He still had that angry look on his face.

“Fine,” she said, rather hoarsely. She cleared her throat. “I’m fine.” She repeated.

“Let’s go,” he said, carrying her books and walking back to the building.

“Aren’t we going to the field?” she asked, confused.

When he didn’t say anything in response, she rolled her eyes and just followed him. He really had huge mood swings most of the time. She shouldn’t be surprised. Suddenly, he pulled her into an empty classroom. He shut the door and put her books on one of the desks.

“What are we doing here?” she asked, looking at him.

“Just…” he vaguely said, gesturing to the room. When she just looked back at him, he said, “Look, I know you’re not okay. I’m giving you time to compose yourself.” He watched as she averted her gaze from him and looked at the floor. “I’ll leave if you want.” He moved towards the door.

“No, it’s fine,” she quietly said. “Stay.”

Kyuhyun remained standing as Jooyeon walked towards the windows. He watched as she obviously struggled with something. He wondered what it was that made her so afraid of physical touch, even being emotionally close to someone. He could tell that, although she hung out with them and treated them as their friend, she never really revealed enough of herself for them to actually get to know her. She still continued to rely on only Taeyeon.

“Do you want me to call Taeyeon?” he gently asked. She probably wanted someone she could talk to.

Turning to him, she smiled, tears brimming in her eyes. “Why are you being so nice to me all of a sudden?”

“I’m not,” he disagreed. “But I hate seeing girls cry.”

“I don’t cry often,” she told him.

“Maybe you should,” he suggested.

“I’m tired of crying,” she said with a sigh, looking out of the window again. Before she went to Seoul that was all that she did.

“What were you doing with that Seungho kid anyway?” he suddenly remembered to ask, feeling annoyed.

“He was asking for help with math,” she explained, looking at him.

“And you helped him?” he asked incredulously.

“He’s in my class,” she told him pointedly. “I didn’t want to be rude nor selfish.” She rolled her eyes at him.

“Don’t you know that he has this mental problem? When he gets a certain liking to a girl, he wants to get close to them. Real close,” he shared, his eyes burying into hers.

“I did not know that,” she said in a whisper, looking away. “I’m sorry, oppa,” she said when he didn’t say anything.

Kyuhyun looked at her, surprised. It was the last thing he expected her to say. “Don’t be sorry,” he responded. “Just be more careful next time.”

“I try,” she said. “But trouble always seems to find me.” She said all this very quietly, mostly to herself, but he heard her clearly.

“Just listen to Hyuk,” he went on, ignoring what she said. “He knows what he’s talking about. If something weird happens, tell us.”

“Jooyeon! Where’ve you been the whole day?” Heechul asked, standing up as she walked in the apartment.

“Oppa, what are you doing here?” Jooyeon asked, smiling and bowing at him, Donghae and Hyukjae.

“They’ve been looking for you. They miss you,” Taeyeon said teasingly. She came from the kitchen, bringing the boys some drinks.

“Kyu’s not answering,” Hyukjae said. He’d been calling him to ask where he was.

“I’m here,” Kyuhyun said, walking in the apartment, surprising everyone.

“Did you walk here together?” Heechul wanted to know, looking from Jooyeon to Kyuhyun then back.

“We did,” Jooyeon said. “But it was sorely against his will,” she added in a whisper, making them all laugh.

Kyuhyun glared at Jooyeon, who giggled and went to the kitchen. “Omma!” she greeted her with a hug.

“Oh Jooyeon,” omma said, turning around and hugging her tightly.

Jooyeon squeezed her eyes shut. All of a sudden she felt like crying again. Warm hugs like this made her want to cry. “Omma,” she mumbled like a little girl.

Omma patted her head soothingly. “Are you alright? You’re shaking.” She moved to push her away to get a good look at her, but Jooyeon continued to hold on to her.

“I’m fine,” she insisted. “I just need a hug.”

“Aigoo, my little child,” omma said. “I thought you hated hugs.”

“Not from you, omma. Never from you,” she said.

“Everything okay?” Taeyeon asked, walking in. “Joo?”

Jooyeon released omma from the hug and turned to her best friend. “Fine. Seungho was just overly friendly at lunch today.”

“How do you mean?” Taeyeon asked concernedly.

“He was smelling my hair,” Jooyeon said, letting out a laugh. “Weird, right?”

“Omo, who is this kid?” omma said, looking upset.

“I told you about him before, omma,” Taeyeon said, putting an arm around Jooyeon. “He was that kid who wanted to be my friend persistently. He really likes to get really close.” She turned to Jooyeon. “That was it, right? He didn’t do anything else?”

“Kyuhyun oppa arrived before he managed to,” Jooyeon said.

Taeyeon smiled a little, looking relieved. Her best friend was sensitive to touch. She was glad that she was slowly getting over her fear of that. It wouldn’t do that these things had to happen to her. “We should thank Kyu then.” She turned to omma. “Can we have dinner out today?”

“Again?” omma said, chuckling.

“I think Jooyeon should experience noraebang here in Seoul,” Taeyeon said.

Omma laughed. “Okay, okay.”

“Let’s go tell the boys!” Taeyeon excitedly said, pulling Jooyeon towards the living room. Donghae stood up to let Jooyeon sit.

“I know that look,” Hyukjae said when they saw Taeyeon grinning like a mad person.

“I don’t like that look,” Donghae commented, sitting on the armrest of Jooyeon’s seat.

“Guys,” Taeyeon said clapping her hands together.

“Here we go,” Heechul said in mock anticipation.

“Let’s go to a noraebang!” Taeyeon clapped her hands excitedly.

Kyuhyun groaned from his comfortable position on the couch beside Heechul. “Why? What’s the occasion?”

“I thought you guys said you had fun the last time,” Taeyeon said with a pout.

“We were being polite,” Kyuhyun admitted. Taeyeon frowned.

“Taeng, if they don’t want to go, it’s totally fine,” Jooyeon said with a chuckle. She was starting to feel bad for the boys. They looked like they were being tortured. “We can go some other time.”

“But I’m doing this for you,” Taeyeon said.

“Why don’t we just go and have dinner?” Jooyeon suggested. “We could go to a noraebang next time. The boys look hungry.”

Taeyeon sighed. “Fine.” The boys looked relieved.
