“Are you up?” Taeyeon asked Jooyeon, who was still in bed. It was another Saturday and she was hoping she could sleep in.
“Why?” Jooyeon asked sleepily, yawning.
“Hyukjae’s having this dinner thing in his house,” Taeyeon informed her.
“Are we supposed to go?” Jooyeon asked, shifting her position on the bed. “He didn’t tell me about it.”
“He doesn’t have to tell you about it. You’re expected to be there,” Taeyeon told her, smiling a little. “Get up and get dressed.”
Apparently, every month, Hyukjae’s family hosted a weekend dinner, where they invited their family and closest friends. It was where all the people from the richest families in Seoul gathered together. So it was a dressy event.
“But it’s still in the evening,” Jooyeon whined.
“We have to help with the preparations,” Taeyeon informed her.
“Really? Why?” Jooyeon asked, sitting up. Don’t rich people have other people do party preparations for them?
“We’ll be there for food tasting and moral support,” Taeyeon said, smiling. “It’s a lot of fun. We can go swimming, too.”
After taking a shower, Jooyeon asked Taeyeon what she was going to wear for the party. “I really don’t have anything suitable for tonight,” she told her.
“You can wear this,” Taeyeon offered, handing her a pretty, knee-length white dress.
“Are you sure?” Jooyeon asked, stunned at the prettiness of the dress.
“Of course,” Taeyeon said, nodding. She smiled. “Remember when we used to borrow each other’s clothes all the time?”
“Yeah,” Jooyeon responded. “Remember when you ruined the gray dress that I had?”
“I keep telling you that that wasn’t my fault!” Taeyeon said, bursting into laughter at the memory. “It was that girl, Jungah, or whatever her name was. She bumped into me because she was oh so jealous that I had gone to the party with Kibum.”
Jooyeon laughed with her. “Still. You borrowed it from me and it got ruined.” She teasingly shook her head.
“Whatever,” Taeyeon said, smiling. She stood up. “Go get ready. Siwon’s picking us up in a couple of minutes.”

“We’re here!” Taeyeon announced as she walked out of the garden hand-in-hand with Siwon, where the pool was. Heechul, Kangin and Hankyung, who were all in the pool, turned to look.
“Hey!” Kangin greeted them with a wave.
“Where’s Jooyeon?” Shindong asked from the buffet table.
“Hyuk’s showing her around,” Siwon said, joining Shindong in eating. “Where’s Hae and Kyu?”
“On their way,” Taeyeon answered. “Donghae just messaged me.”
“Are you girls going swimming?” Hankyung asked, smiling.
“Maybe,” Taeyeon said.
“Hyung!” Siwon said, pointing at Hankyung, half-joking. “That’s my girlfriend you’re talking to.”
Taeyeon giggled. “Hey, summer vacation’s coming up! What are our plans?”
“I was just going to ask you guys about that,” Heechul said. “Let’s go out of the country. Like Thailand! Or the Philippines!”
“That’s cool! Let’s discuss it when Kyu and Donghae are here,” Kangin seconded.

“Your home is so beautiful, oppa,” Jooyeon gushed as Hyukjae toured her around. They were on their way up to the third floor, which was what he wanted to show her first.
“I’m glad you like it,” Hyukjae happily said. “Come, I’ll show you the balcony. You’ll like the view.”
When the reached the third floor, Jooyeon found that half of it was a huge veranda, overlooking their backyard and the city of Seoul. One could see the cityscape, the Seoul Tower, and even the Han River.
“Wow,” Jooyeon said, leaning on the balcony and taking in the beautiful view. This was precisely one of the reasons why she’d always wanted to go to Seoul. It was just so beautiful everyday.
Hyukjae stood beside her, leaning on the balcony as well. “I come here when I’m not feeling so happy about something,” he shared, smiling a little.
She looked at him. “What makes you sad, oppa?”
“Not too many things. Friends are very important to me,” he said earnestly, looking back at her. He really liked Jooyeon a lot. Being the youngest of three boys, he was always the one being babied and pampered. He liked the thought that he could do that with Jooyeon. He’d done that with Taeyeon in the past, but being Siwon’s girlfriend now, he couldn’t do that as much as he wanted to.
She smiled warmly at him. “I’ll have to make sure then that I don’t get sad so oppa doesn’t become sad.” Then, uncharacteristically, she leaned on him for a second.
He chuckled, appreciating her affection. “Don’t hesitate to come to me when you’re upset about something, okay?”
“Okay,” she agreed. She took a deep breath and looked at the view again. “I want to be able to go up the Seoul Tower,” she declared, pointing at it.
“Let’s go tomorrow then,” he suggested.
“Really?” she happily said. “This is why anchovies are my favorite.”
Hyukjae laughed. “Stop sucking up.”
“Ya!”
Hyukjae and Jooyeon looked down. It was Kangin.
“What are you two doing up there?” Kangin said. “Everyone’s down here. Kyu and Hae have arrived.”
After a quick tour of the rest of the house, Hyukjae and Jooyeon went to the garden. Taeyeon called Jooyeon over to taste the food on the buffet table. She, Siwon and Shindong just kept on eating everything.
“What were you guys doing up there?” Kangin asked quietly, glancing subtly at Jooyeon.
“I was showing her around,” Hyukjae said with a shrug.
“You’re not putting the moves on her, are you?” Heechul wanted to know, a smirk on his face.
“I know better than to do that,” Hyukjae answered, watching Donghae approach Jooyeon. Kyuhyun followed his gaze.

“Are you having fun?” Donghae asked Jooyeon, who was happily munching on some pastries that Taeyeon had her taste.
“Lots,” Jooyeon said with a wide smile. “Have you tasted these?” she asked him, offering him a cookie. He shook his head. “Come on, oppa. You have got to taste this.” When he didn’t move, she moved closer to him and fed him the cookie herself. Donghae choked a bit, which made Jooyeon laugh. “Good right?”
Donghae nodded, chuckling. He watched as she then proceeded to try another pastry and another and another.
“I’m beginning to think that Kyuhyun was right about you,” he remarked, watching her struggle over which food she should try next. She looked at him curiously, crumbs on the sides of her lips. He smiled and took a step forward, gently removing the crumbs, his thumb lightly grazing her lips.
She stood there, rigid for a second. Her heart pounded on overdrive as soon as his finger touched her face. She’d never felt that way before. Deciding to ignore it, she narrowed her eyes at him. “You’re not talking about me being a pig, are you?”
He merely grinned at her, feeling relieved that she wasn’t upset about him touching her face without permission. She narrowed her eyes at him again. “I’m letting that go since you’re my fishy and everything,” she said nonchalantly.
Donghae continued to laugh at her. Suddenly, he noticed that they were alone at the buffet table. He looked around to see where Taeyeon, Siwon and Shindong had gone. They were by the pool, chatting with each other. As he turned to look away, Taeyeon caught his eye. She smiled slyly at him. Ignoring her, he turned to Jooyeon.
“Hey, did you know that Hyukjae has a tree house?” he told her.
“Really? Where?” she asked curiously, looking around.
“Right there,” he said, pointing on the edge of the garden.
She looked at where she was pointing and grinned like a little kid. “Let’s go!”
“Hyukjae,” Donghae called as Jooyeon began to run. “We’ll go up to the tree house.” He then followed after her.
“Is something going on with them?” Shindong asked, clueless. He looked at Taeyeon. Everyone followed.
“Don’t look at me,” Taeyeon said.
“You’re her best friend,” Heechul pointed out.
“Still,” Taeyeon said. “I don’t know anything.”
“How is that possible? You’re the only person she talks to,” Kyuhyun argued.
“For all I know, she could’ve told Hyuk here,” Taeyeon said, nodding towards him. “They seem close.” She smiled cheekily at him. Hyukjae merely smiled.
“Has she had a boyfriend before?” Hankyung asked. Taeyeon shook her head.
“Never?” Kangin asked in shock.
“Never,” Taeyeon confirmed.
“How come?” Siwon wondered aloud.
“Yeah, it seems very unlikely,” Hyukjae added.
“I know what you guys mean,” Taeyeon said with a chuckle. “I also can’t believe that she hasn’t had someone in the two years we haven’t seen each other, but it really is true.”
“She doesn’t like girls, does she?” Kangin asked fearfully.
Everyone burst out in laughter, but looked at Taeyeon, waiting for her answer in anticipation. “These boys,” Taeyeon said, shaking her head. “No, she does not like girls. She’s very much into boys. I just think she’s waiting for the right one to come along.”
“So a lot of wrong ones had arrived?” Hankyung asked interestedly.
“You could say that,” Taeyeon said, looking a bit pensive. “She’s being patient.”
Kyuhyun watched as Taeyeon avoided everyone’s eyes after that and looked at Donghae and Jooyeon go up the tree house. “Did something happen?” he inquired.
But Taeyeon ignored the question.

“This is wonderful!” Jooyeon gushed as she looked around the tree house. There was a small bed, a mini refrigerator, and a small television, complete with a DVD player and PS3. She couldn’t help but chuckle at this.
“There are three things Hyukjae can’t live without: sleep, food and gaming,” Donghae told her, chuckling as well.
“What about basketball and soccer?” she asked, smiling as she picked up a sports game for PS3.
“I guess you could classify that in gaming,” he said with a shrug.
“Do you guys come up here often?” she asked, walking out to the small balcony and testing if it’s safe to lean on it.
“Not as much as before,” he admitted. “We just play in his room or in their game room.”
She laughed. “I figured he didn’t have just one set of games. He really is addicted.”
“Well, even more so when he found out you were into gaming,” he told her, giving her a knowing smile.
She shook her head and rolled her eyes. “He’s probably practicing so he can beat me next time.”
Laughing, he added, “No wonder he’s been working harder. He’s even resulted to asking Kyuhyun’s help, which he’s never done and had sworn he would never do.”
“I’ll have to play with Kyuhyun one of these days and test his skill,” she said, enjoying the breeze.
“Cocky, are we?” he teased, situating himself beside her.
“He’s the one who’s boasting about his ability,” she reminded him. She smiled and looked at him. “Thank you for bringing me here! It’s really beautiful. And quiet.”
“So you think the boys are too noisy, huh?” he said jokingly.
She laughed. “I do like it. But it’s nice to be quiet sometimes.”
Donghae kept quiet after a couple of seconds. He took a deep breath and asked the question he’d wanted to ask for a while now. “Jooyeon, why are you so afraid of physical contact?”
Instead of being upset like he expected she would be, Jooyeon smiled. “So you noticed that, huh?”
“Everyone noticed,” he corrected her. She smiled a sad smiled. “If it’s something that you’re not ready to share…”
“The reason…” she began, thinking how she should say it. “I just didn’t want to come off as easy… um, cheap? Coz I know how it may be misinterpreted.” He gave her a confused look. “It’s a self-preservation thing.”
“Why?” he asked, still not understanding what she was saying. “Did anything happen?”
She smiled. “Oppa, be patient. I’ll tell you everything in time.”
“So what if I asked you to dance in tonight’s party? There’s going to be some physical contact,” he curiously asked.
“I don’t know how to dance,” she told him with a shrug, going back in the tree house, “so it won’t matter coz I’ll say no.”
“You can’t not dance,” he said, shaking his head and following her in. “Everyone’s going to ask you to dance.”
Jooyeon made a face. “Really?” She then chuckled. “You guys really keep on making my life difficult, being so sweet and touchy all the time.”
Donghae looked pleased with being called ‘sweet’. “Well…?” he prodded.
“Well what?” she asked.
“What if someone asked you to dance, what would you do? Surely, you won’t say no so coldly,” he pressed.
“Can I say no sweetly then?” she asked teasingly. He smirked. She straightened up and sighed, facing him. “I guess there’s no other way then. You’ll just have to teach me or lock me up here so that no one will ask me to dance.”
“Er, this place doesn’t really have any locks,” he said, looking around. When she just laughed, he went on, “Are you sure? I really don’t want to make you feel uncomfortable.”
“How is that possible?” she asked him, rolling her eyes. “You always make me feel comfortable, oppa. Besides, I trust you.”
Donghae looked at her. Jooyeon trusted him. Slowly, he moved towards her, stopping just a couple of inches in front of her. Jooyeon looked back at him expectantly. Knowing that he was hesitating, she decided to take the next step.
“I think I saw how it’s done in movies,” she courageously said, taking a step forward. She slowly put her right hand on his left hand and lifted it. Then she placed his right hand on her waist even more slowly, afterwards placing her left hand on his right shoulder. “It’s like this, right?”
He chuckled. “You’re so old fashioned.” She removed her hands on him and crossed them on her chest, looking embarrassed. “Let me show you,” he said, smiling at her.
Donghae uncrossed her arms, gently put it around his neck then put his arms around her waist. This made their faces inches away from each other. As he looked at her, Jooyeon suddenly didn’t know what to do. She looked everywhere else, but at him.
“We’re still not dancing,” she said, breaking the silence.
This made him burst into laughter. “I know that,” he said. “We just… move.”
Leisurely, they began to move around the small tree house. Surprisingly, Jooyeon found that dancing like this was easy. Maybe it was because Donghae made it so easy for her. He kept on guiding her, making sure he didn’t step on her foot and that she didn’t step on his.
After a minute, she said, “Dancing without music is weird.”
Not stopping, he commented, “So many complaints.”
Before she could muster up a retort, Donghae began humming a song and then began singing softly.
“This night is blessing the day that we met.
The moon is out in the sky and the stars are smiling.
I wish that your smile won’t be erased as I pray
for these happy days to always continue.
Jooyeon closed her eyes, feeling Donghae’s arms around her waist tighten, bringing her closer to him. She never thought she’d be caught in a situation like this with him or with anyone. Before leaving Jeonju, she had vowed to never get too close to anyone. She was guessing that this was breaking that promise. But how could she not when he was so sweet and understanding? He was always so patient with her.
When there are hard times, if I’d just listen to your
voice for a moment, I could forget everything and laugh it off.
Donghae leaned his head on hers, closing his eyes as well. He knew he was treading a dangerous line, but he couldn’t help himself. It felt so natural, like it was the right thing to do.
I was so fortunate to able to meet you
because you’d make me smile by just being near-.”
“What’s going on here?”
Jooyeon and Donghae jumped.
Both turned their heads at the same time and ended up hitting each other on the face.
Both groaned loudly simultaneously.
“You two are so ridiculous,” Hyukjae said, bursting into fits of laughter.
