Not Good Enough

She's laughing again.

He watches as she leans her head back a bit as she does, casually flipping her hair over her shoulder, the dark brown locks glinting against the light, her glittery bracelet sparkling. Tiffany has probably said something funny again because their whole table bursts into a loud cacophony of mirthful sounds, and Baekhyun finds himself smiling to himself. Seeing Taeyeon smile always makes him smile.

"Stalking again, I see." A tray slams down beside him and he jumps. Jongin takes the empty seat beside his. "You're not going to get the girl from afar, you know."

Baekhyun glances back at Taeyeon's table, where she's surrounded by eight other beautiful girls, and Baekhyun can't help but think about what Jongin just said. He can't say that he hasn't thought about it, even going through the pros and cons.

1) He's three years younger than her, but age is just a number and he's long ignored that minute detail. 2) They are being employed by the same company, where dating isn't allowed, but he knows that there are always ways to sneak around. He's seen the other idols in the company do it. 3) Dating between idols is frowned upon by the fans, but, again, he knows that fans thrive on that kind of knowledge, that the idols they love so much has fallen in love with someone else.

There are actually a couple of times where he's considered actually making a move on Taeyeon. He's attempted to invite her to join him in buying a birthday gift for his mom, tried to ask her if she wanted to try the new yogurt stand down the street, and thought about inviting her to see the new Emma Watson movie. But he's all kept them intact in his mind.

Because, as he looks across the room, where Taeyeon stands up, smoothing down the white and black outfit she had on for their next stage, he knows that he's not someone who's meant for her. Taeyeon deserves someone who is at par with everything that she is and he just isn't that guy and he will never be, not lowly Byun Baekhyun, who hides between bright smiles and dark eyeliner.

Baekhyun merely nudges Jongin as he makes a move to stand up to prepare for their next stage and leaves their makeshift cafeteria.

He doesn't notice Taeyeon stopping in her tracks to watch him leave and doesn't notice the exchange of looks between her and Jongin, who shrugs as if to say I tried.

And, just because of that, he makes himself not good enough for her.
