Park Jooyeon has always thought that Seoul was one of the most beautiful cities in the world. All the places to go to, the people walking on the sidewalks, the Han River, everything was just breath-taking. She was so happy that she was finally there. Finally staying in her dream city.

She had wanted to come here since… well, since ever. Back in Jeonju, she watched TV a lot, which always got her a big scolding from her omma because she keeps on saying that it’s a waste of time blah, blah, blah-anyway, back to the point. She watched TV a lot and kept on seeing these Seoul adverts. It was like they were beckoning her to leave for Seoul at that instant.

She was seven then and it was more like a whim or something like that. It wasn’t like she wanted to leave her family and friends behind. Okay, that’s a lie. She had one friend. But she didn’t want to leave her behind either. It was when that one friend moved away to Seoul that she decided that she really wanted to go. They had promised to be best friends forever and nothing was going to change that. Ever. They even spat on it.

And now that she was finally there… her heart could burst from happiness. She wanted to spread my arms wide and just breathe everything in, like what they did in movies. So she did just that. She closed her eyes and spread her arms wide, breathing everything in.

“Ya! Stop doing that. People are looking.”

Jooyeon opened her eyes and chuckled at her best friend of 14 years, Kim Taeyeon, or Taeng as she liked to call her, but still didn’t drop her arms. Instead, she looked up at the sky as an airplane was flying through. It was exactly two years since Taeyeon had moved there. She felt so good to finally see her. She could tell that Taeyeon hadn’t changed. She was still incredibly short, too white to pass for a ghost, her dark-reddish hair falling just below her shoulders. She was still dorky, a trait that she shot back at me all the time; kiddie, though she pretended to be the mature one - she should be, she’s older! She was still incredibly pretty, drawing people to her porcelain doll features. But at the same time, she was different. She couldn’t point her finger on it yet. Something’s definitely changed, though.

“Ya! Jooyeon-ah! Are you listening to me? Aish, this girl! Hasn’t even been here for a day and causing trouble already. Do you know how I hate staying outdoors for a long time?”

One thing she can say for sure: Taeyeon’s still an ahjumma.

Deciding she shouldn’t annoy her best friend even more, she dropped her hands to her sides and hurried over to her. “You missed scolding me, didn’t you?”

Taeyeon looked at her and looked like she was deciding whether to stay annoyed or finally let it go. She smiled. “You haven’t changed, haven’t you?”

“Isn’t it fun to relive the old days?” Jooyeon teased her.

In the two years, they’d never seen each other. There wasn’t time, nor was there money to keep on going back and forth. They stayed in touch through calls and texting, when Jooyeon finally convinced her appa to buy her a mobile phone. They would always talk at the end of the day, sharing what they did. In the beginning it was easy, but as time went by, it grew harder and harder to stay friends. Taeyeon’s life was changing and Jooyeon couldn’t keep up with her. It was a struggle for both of them, but Jooyeon never gave up. Taeyeon understood her when all kids back home never did. She wasn’t going to allow distance to destroy their friendship.

Soon after, they reached the apartment Taeyeon was staying in with her mom. Sadly, her dad passed away a year after they moved. Jooyeon still kicked herself for not being there when she needed her to be her best friend the most.

“This is it,” Taeyeon told her seriously.

“Okay,” Jooyeon said, confused at her seriousness.

“I hope you’re not expecting anything grand,” Taeyeon went on, watching me. “Just because we’re in Seoul doesn’t mean we’re rich.”

“What are you rambling on about? I don’t care,” Jooyeon said, rolling my eyes. “Besides, I’m not one to choose. I’m an inconvenience as it is.”

“You’re right,” Taeyeon agreed, smirking.

Before Jooyeon could slap her arm, she opened the door and we went in.

It was true that the place wasn’t grand in the sense of the word, but it was grand enough. It was certainly much, much better than the way she’d lived back home. Entering, there was a small hallway that directly led to the spacious living room. When one turned right, there was another hallway that led to the kitchen and to the other rooms.

“Omma!” Taeyeon called as they went in and closed the door behind them. Removing their footwear, they put all her baggage near the door and went to the kitchen. “We’re here!”

“Jooyeon!” Taeyeon’s omma wrapped her into a big, warm hug, something that she definitely missed. “It’s so good to see you again!”

“I missed you, too, omma,” Jooyeon said happily, hugging her back tightly.

When she released her, she held her at arm’s length. “But you’ve grown so thin! Well, we’re going to have to do something about that. We’ll fatten you up. Dinner will be ready in a bit.”

Jooyeon grinned excitedly. Taeyeon then decided to show her room, which was decked in purple, her favorite color.

“I hope you don’t mind sharing a room with me,” she said.

“Ya, we already talked about this,” Jooyeon reminded her. “I’m happy and grateful that you’re letting me stay at all. Do you still snore, though?”

Taeyeon looked at her and smiled wistfully. Jooyeon knew what she was thinking. The good old days. “You bet. Do your feet still smell?” Taeyeon shot back.
