For the rest of the week and the days that followed, Hyukjae and Donghae walked Jooyeon home and stayed over for omma’s delicious Kimbap. During the days when Taeyeon didn’t have council meetings, she and Siwon walked home with them as well.
Jooyeon really enjoyed being with them. They were fun to be with. There was a lot of laughter and teasing when they were all together. They were all gentlemen, very sweet and brotherly. Hyukjae and Donghae always made sure that she ate, that she had someone to walk her home, and that she was doing well in all her classes. Taeyeon didn’t have anything left to do with regards to her. The two boys took care of everything. It touched her. No one had cared so much about her before, except for Taeyeon.
“Hey!” Hyukjae appeared at her side, grinning his gummy smile. “You look confused.”
“Hey,” Jooyeon affectionately greeted him back. “I was thinking if I should go to the library and borrow some books for a report or just go home already.”
“What report?” he asked. “For Literature?”
“Yeah,” she answered. “I’m thinking of writing about famous couples throughout history.”
“That’s easy,” he said, waving a dismissing hand. “Romeo and Juliet. Anthony and Cleopatra. Tom and Kate. Brad and Angelina.” Jooyeon burst into laughter. “You can do research on that next time.” He grabbed her hand. “For now, come with me to the gym.”
“Why, what’s there?” she asked curiously, gently removing her hand from his.

“Where’s Hyuk?” Siwon asked as he dribbled the ball.
“He went to look for Jooyeon,” Donghae answered as Siwon passed him the ball. He took a shot.
“So what’s she like?” Siwon wanted to know.
“If you bothered to actually get to know her, you’d know,” Donghae said, running after the ball.
“I just don’t want Taeyeon to feel uncomfortable,” Siwon said, grabbing the ball from Donghae.
“Taeyeon knows how good of a guy you are,” Donghae said, smirking. “You don’t need to overdo it. Besides, Jooyeon’s curious about you.”
“She is?” Siwon asked.
“Of course,” Donghae said. “She wants to know what kind of guy her best friend’s dating.”
“Hey Siwon!” a guy, shorter than Siwon, but definitely bigger, called as he entered the court with some other guys. “You ready to play?” He nodded at Donghae.
“Hey Kangin hyung,” Donghae greeted. Kangin and the other guys with him, Hankyung, Heechul and Shindong were all upperclassmen.
Siwon chuckled. “Are you?”
The guys trooped to the bleachers to put down their bags then started stretching. Some shot some hoops with Donghae and Siwon.
“Where Hyukjae?” Shindong asked.
“Here!” Hyukjae said, waving at them as he entered the gym, followed by Jooyeon.
“Who’s the chick?” Hankyung asked interestedly.
“Don’t even think about it, hyung,” Siwon said, suddenly protective. “She’s Taeyeon’s best friend.”
“Is this the famous Park Jooyeon?” Kangin asked, fascinated.
“The one and only,” Donghae answered.
“She’s even prettier than Taeyeon made her out to be,” Kangin observed, smiling. The others could only nod in agreement.
“Interesting,” Heechul commented. Siwon shook his head.
“Guys, this is Jooyeon,” Hyukjae proudly introduced. “Jooyeon, these are the guys.”
“It’s nice to meet you,” Jooyeon said, bowing politely.
“I’m Kangin,” Kangin said, stepping forward and shaking her hand, a big smile on his face. Siwon could only roll his eyes.
“Hankyung,” Hankyung said, staying where he was and nodding at her.
Jooyeon turned to Shindong, who suddenly moved towards her and wrapped her into a hug. “I’m Shindong,” he said. Jooyeon let out a forced laugh.
“Ya!” Heechul said, pulling him away. “We’re sorry about him. He’s just…” He then smiled. “I’m Heechul.”
“It’s nice to meet you all,” Jooyeon said, truly meaning it.
“It’s nice to finally meet Taeyeon’s best friend,” Heechul said.
Jooyeon smiled. “I’m happy to meet all of Taeyeon’s friends.” She looked around then back at them. “I think I’m delaying your game.” She smiled sheepishly.
“Delay it all you want,” Kangin said, grinning, his eyes disappearing. “We’re all cool with it.”
Siwon shook his head. When Kangin saw a pretty girl, his head went to the gutter. “Let’s play,” Siwon said, bouncing the ball on Kangin’s back, which caused Kangin to stumble forward.
Kangin turned around and watched Siwon run. “Oh you better run,” he said then took off after him.
“So there’s seven of us,” Hyukjae said, frowning a bit as he counted the guys. “I guess I’ll pass for today.”
“I’ll sit with Jooyeon,” Donghae offered.
Hyukjae smiled his gummy smile. “Thanks!”
Donghae and Jooyeon sat on the third row of the bleachers and watched the others warm up. Or rather, they watched them horse around. Kangin was still running after Siwon. Heechul and Shindong had suddenly taken a liking to teasing Hyukjae, while Hankyung just shot some hoops.
“Yes, we’re always like this,” Donghae answered before Jooyeon could even get the question out. “You’ll get used to it.”
“I like it,” Jooyeon happily told him. “I’ve never had so many guy friends before.”
Donghae looked at her in astonishment. “Really?”
“Yeah,” she said, nodding. “What, you think I had a lot of guy friends?”
“Yes, because… It’s just…” he stammered, blushing.
“You’re cute, fishy,” she said without thinking. “I mean-.” Now it was her turn to blush.
“What did you call me?” Donghae asked, his eyes twinkling. He watched as Jooyeon squirmed under his gaze and turn redder.
“You must’ve misheard me,” Jooyeon evaded the question. “I said…” She sighed and finally looked at him.
He decided to let her off the hook and watched the guys play ball. Just when Jooyeon was going to breathe a sigh of relief, Donghae said, “Only two people call me fishy.”
“Oh?” Jooyeon responded, feeling embarrassed. She had no idea why it slipped from her mouth. She should think first before saying anything.
“My omma and noona,” he shared.
“I’m sorry,” she said. “It’s just… the first time I met you, it’s the first thing that popped into my head.”
“It’s alright,” he said, smiling at her. “I don’t mind that you have a nickname for me. Makes me feel special. Hyukjae doesn’t have one too, does he?”
Jooyeon blushed. “Anchovy,” she told him helplessly.
Donghae burst out into laughter. “We’ll be your eternal fishies.”
Jooyeon smiled at the thought. She then turned her attention to the game. It was Siwon, Hyukjae and Heechul against Kangin, Hankyung and Shindong. The ball was with Hankyung. He was dribbling it, strategizing how to be able to shoot. Hyukjae was the one guarding him.
“Stay on his left,” Jooyeon muttered thoughtlessly as Hyukjae, in front of Hankyung, moved towards Hankyung’s right instead. This was what Hankyung thought Hyukjae would do so he moved to the left and took a shot.
Donghae looked at her curiously.
Jooyeon bit her lip as Siwon dribbled the ball with Kangin guarding him. “Pass it to Heechul,” she whispered. “Then move towards the ring so he could pass it back to you. Hyukjae, you’re all over the place.”
“Uh excuse me,” Donghae said, pretending to look around. “Who are you talking to?”
Jooyeon got out of her thoughts and looked at him. “Sorry, I tend to talk to myself while watching basketball,” she said, another pink tinge on her cheeks.
“Are you a fan?” he inquired. Jooyeon really fascinated him. There seemed to be so many sides to her that one didn’t expect to see in such a pretty, petite girl.
She giggled. “A bit,” she admitted. “I know it’s weird and everything.”
“I think you’re the coolest girl I’ve ever met,” Donghae said, amazed. “Really. A girl who plays Starcraft and is a basketball fan.”
“You haven’t seen her play yet,” Taeyeon said, appearing out of nowhere and taking a seat beside Jooyeon.
“Hey,” Jooyeon greeted her. “I didn’t see you come in.”
“Back door,” Taeyeon told her. “I just knew you’d be here.”
“Hyukjae practically dragged me,” Jooyeon said with a smile.
Taeyeon laughed and nudged Jooyeon. “Donghae’s in shock.”
Jooyeon turned to Donghae. “You play, too?” he asked.
“Oh I’m not good at all,” Jooyeon said, shaking her head.
“Liar,” Taeyeon muttered, which Donghae clearly heard.
Donghae stood up. “Ya,” he called to the guys. “I want to play!”
“The numbers are uneven, Hae,” Heechul said.
“Jooyeon’s going to play,” Donghae announced.
“What?” Jooyeon and the boys chorused.
Jooyeon looked at Taeyeon helplessly. “Go on,” Taeyeon said, chuckling.
“It’s a good thing I wore sneakers today,” Jooyeon said with a sigh as she got up.
