For time estimates, I find I'm most accurate if I use a x2x2 method. I double my initial estimate, and use that as my internal estimate. I then double that for use as my external estimate. I find that if it is a task I've had a lot of experience with, and I can reasonably limit interruptions it gets close to the x2 estimate. If not, its the x4.
