In Which the Hunger Games is a distraction

I caved and went to see The Hunger Games and loved it (I blame fandom for making me associate it with Twilight for so long). And then spent the weekend reading the entire trilogy. I actually liked the movie better - the "behind the scenes" of the Hunger Games really added to it since the books are all limited by the 1POV narration ( Read more... )

I haven't read any of the fic, but I have had a friend tell me that there are a lot of bad fics in fandom. ): Sigh. Good luck!

But if you like funny comics and cute art, there are these which will entertain you for all of ... 3 minutes.

I'm so shocked... the material should be GOOD since the source material is rich...

Haven't read much of the fic, but there is a varied quality on AO3. Putz around there for a while, and I'm sure you'll find something good there. ♥

A03 is the fallback lately.... I'm kind of surprised at the lack of structure in the fandom. I thought there would be more.

My hatred of the people who insist on associating The Hunger Games with Twilight and/or Battle Royale know no bounds. I actually bought the book about a week after it was released after I read a glowing review and I got so excited it was getting popular.

And then SMeyer said she liked them and I was like, "Oh no. I am going to be flooded by people who distill the damn book into SHIPS." And sure enough, that happened, and I was sad.

Haven't read a lot of the fic, though. I got pretty much everything I wanted out of the series from the books and movie. And the fic I've found has been pretty heavily focused on the ships. And, yeah, no thanks.

The Hunger Games was marketed as the "next thing" after Twilight. Given my dislike of Twilight, I wasn't about to try it...

And it's not SHIPS, it's TEAMS. I will admit to being interested in Peeta/Katniss, but more from the point of view that I love Peeta and will read anything with him in it, I think. We'll see what my attitude is in three weeks.

I have a LIST of fics I want to read. I think I'll work on posting it...

Twilight is pretty much the great anomaly of the YA world in the sense that it's the most vapid series to make it big. Even Cassie Claire's Mortal Instruments series that she's been milking for FOREVER have more going on for them than Twilight does. (Which just goes to show that I despise both series for very different reasons.)

Even some of the worst YA, I can understand how it got published. Twilight... not so much. If Twilight were a fanfic, it would be Spin the Bottle. Long, poorly written, and yet bizarrely popular.

I wrote a post-Mockingjay fic of Gale stopping by Katniss' house, years after the war. I kind of wanted to gather up the loose ends of their relationship, but I stuck to canon mostly. Do you have any preferences as far as characters go?

I poked around AO3 after seeing the movie (I read the books last summer but didn't get into the fandom), and found that there's actually a decent amount of good fic, and a lot of them deal with minor characters, although most of them are pretty short. I recently recced a bunch of them to a friend, so in case any of these seem to have an interesting premise:
Foxface
Johanna Mason
AU where Peeta wins the first games (Katniss dies)
Cato/Glimmer
Cashmere/Gloss
AU where Gale and Madge go to the hunger games instead
