Seuss! Seuss! Seuss!

I love Doctor Seuss, but I just had one of those my childhood is threatened! moments. I picked up Dr Seuss goes to War, and it was really interesting. It shows the editorial cartoons he did during WWII and the lead up to it. There is something really strange viewing Hitler from a contemporary perspective (especially in Seuss's oh-so-distinctive ( Read more... )

Yeah, the 20% who oppose loudly and the 20% who support it loudly have been fighting since the beginning of time. (I think 20% is an arbitrary number so don't ask for sources lol). It's the quiet middle that sways the whole country one way or another. My Poppa told me that during the Depression it was really really bad and that he hopes Foodstamps never go away because you never ever ever want to see people starve to death for want of food, even though he'd prefer if people had time to grow their own food. He recounted tales of eating inedible food just to get something in your stomach for a real meal. In fact a lot of easy-to-cook, hobbled together recipes have been passed down in my family to make eating cheaper. Of course they don't look pleasant, in fact I brought my Tunafish and Peas swimming in cream of mushroom soup to college, and grown adults stared when I pulled it out and ate it since it looks completely disgusting.

20 percent is optimistic - I'd say five percent each way. Most people are part of that silent majority.

I've never looked at Food Stamps from that perspective - good point, though. Thing is, every era has its challenges, and we are incredibly lucky that our challenges aren't simple in some ways. A society has to advance so that "first world problems" become the major issue for most of its residents.

And... yuck. No offense, but yuck. I am the picky kid who doesn't like my food touching. ;)

I hope so. That five percent is awfully loud...

Yeah.. wonder what our challenges will be? To stop our country from being bought out/bribed by corporations?

LoL! One of my brothers is the same exact way about food. He often would skip out on eating that concoction but he was okay with Mac N Cheese with Peas and Salmon Crisp as long as they were divided up carefully and not touching, unlike the family tradition of stirring it together like some sort of casserole. XD
