It was supposed to be a quiet relaxing day off. A day for him to sleep in, tidy up his place and cook himself a nutritious home-cooked meal. He hadn’t counted on the man who was currently sprawled out on his couch coming over. The man had barely said anything, instead choosing to watch some random sitcom. He had shown up at younger’s door well before he had wanted to wake up, coffee in his hands as if he knew that the man whose apartment he was invading would need it as an apology for the early visit. He handed him the cup, let himself in, and plopped down on the couch, hand already reaching for the TV remote that that had been left forgotten on the cushions the night before.

“Aoi,” Yutaka called out to the man who had invaded his apartment without a word.

An answering grunt came from the direction of the occupied couch.

“Why are you here?” Yutaka asked, hating how his voice was still thick from sleep and could possibly come off as either irritated or harsh when really he was simply curious and confused. “And at this hour too?”

The television blinked on into existence, a commercial for a fast food restaurant making the electronic device display bright images of food and produce a cheery tune that failed to cover up the silence that Yutaka heard, waiting for the man he considered to be a friend as well as a bandmate to answer him.

Aoi turned his head slightly towards the drummer who was still standing in the entryway to his apartment clutching a cup of coffee, his hair standing up in random places. In his head Yutaka praised himself for at least throwing on a tank top and lounge pants before he answered his door.

“I couldn’t sleep.”

Having given what he no doubt thought was a sufficient answer. Aoi turned his view back to the television, flipping through channels as he slipped from the paper coffee cup in his hand. Yutaka however was left even more confused by that answer than before he had heard it. But Yutaka did not ask any of the many questions that invaded his currently underpowered brain.

“Coffee will just keep you awake,” came Yutaka’s statement that only served to confirm the obviousness of the situation so that his brain could better process said situation.

“It’s not coffee,” Aoi stated simply as he settled on some cheezy sitcom that still continued to air even though it had been cancelled over a decade ago. “It’s hot chocolate.”

With that statement, Yutaka closed the door to his apartment, transferred the coffee in his hands from the paper cup to one of his own mugs, and then settled into the armchair by the window to sip the bitter liquid that would activated the synapses in his brain so that the organ could do more than control and monitor basic bodily functions.

For the first hour Yutaka’s eyes stayed focused mainly on the raven-haired guitarist who occupied the beige couch as if it was his own in his own place and Yutaka was the visitor. Yutaka sipped at the brown liquid in his mug even after it grew cold. Yutaka pondered the reason why Aoi was currently in his apartment at a time when those in their occupation should still be asleep in their bedrooms with blackout curtains blocking out the early morning light. The man’s excuse was a valid one as evidenced by the darkness that took residence upon the puffy flesh that resided below his eyes. However it didn’t explain why he was over here at his place. It wasn’t like they were the closest in the band. But then again Yutaka knew himself to be the only on in the band who could feasibly be awake at this hour. Sill it seemed odd to him that this man was here in his apartment.

The first hour passed by and Yutaka’s coffee cup ran dry of the miracle liquid that would keep him from falling back to sleep. Still Aoi didn’t talk; simply choosing to stare at the flickering pictures on the television.

Another hour passed by and a comedy movie came on to the television, replacing the reruns of the cheezy sitcom. Aoi made no move to change the channel. It was then that Yutaka realized that while Aoi’s dark eyes were aimed at the television screen, they weren’t taking in any of the images passed before them. Yutaka understood then that Aoi couldn’t sleep because he was thinking too much about something, mulling it over and over in his mind to the point where he couldn’t stop thinking about it. Unfortunately for Aoi, he wouldn’t be able to sleep until his thinking reached a conclusion or until his body slipped into exhaustion and forced his brain to shut down before the lack of sleep killed him.

Two more hours passed before the movie ended to be replaced by another romantic comedy. Yutaka spent most of that time with his head leaned back, watching as the sky slowly changed color as the day progressed, as clouds slowly drifted in the same direction together making their circuit of the world. Yutaka wondered why he didn’t look at the sky more often when it was so interesting and relaxing. You could think about everything and nothing when you stared at the sky.

The TV went silent and Yutaka turned his head away from the moving azure painting that his window displayed. The television was devoid of both picture and sound but it had not been turned off, merely an unfilled space in the string of commercials between programs. It was a brief silence, momentary, but it allowed Yutaka to notice the small sounds coming from his couch that seemed amplified in the unexpected quiet.

Aoi’s eyes had finally answered sleep’s beckoning call, covered by the human version of curtains. One could not claim his face to be one of peace and serenity in his slumber, however. His eyebrows were knit together, creating trenches in his forehead that had the possibility of being permanent before long. His lips moved as if he was forming words, making the soft sounds that Yutaka had heard and continued to hear even as the programming on the TV resumed itself. He realized with this that the man before him was thinking about something so intensely that it invaded his dreams, leaving him without any way to escape from it for even a short while.

Yutaka could do nothing buy pity the mess of a man before him.

He pondered once again what it could possibly that Aoi was thinking so incessantly of. It was obviously something along the lines of a very personal issue, something like his health. But for some reason Yutaka was sure that it couldn’t be anything dealing with his health as any symptom noticeable enough for Aoi to visit the doctor would have been noticed by him with how much time they all spent with each other. And Aoi had always seemed happy and cheerful to Yutaka before this moment where he seemed so tired and stressed.

A small murmur left Aoi’s mouth in the form of Yutaka’s name, his real one and not his stage one, and Yutaka was suddenly worried that he had been caught staring too intensely at Aoi. But the man remained asleep, though the murmuring continued. Mumbles of his own name and love and worry and uncertainty and fear of rejection and heartache and stupidity and foolishness assaulted the drummer’s ears.

A smile played on the drummer’s lips as he continued to watch as Yuu slept a troubled sleep. The dimple on his cheek transformed from a symbol of adorableness to one of deviousness.

Stealthily he set his empty mug upon the coffee table in front of him as he stood up from the armchair he had been sitting in for hours. His calloused hands grabbed the blanket that he kept folded over the arm of the couch for convenience before they deftly unfolded it. Gently the soft material was placed over the restless sleeper so as not to wake him.

Yutaka returned to his seat, content to watch Yuu sleep as he plotted ways to make the man confess his love, if only for him to reciprocate it. The TV murmured on in the background oblivious to its unneeded presence to the two future lovers.

A/N:Yes, I did switch between Aoi's stage name and real name on purpose. This story is told mainly from Kai's perspective and thus the change of the name shows a change in how Kai views Aoi. Instead of being distant with stage names, calling him by his real name shows that Kai sees him more intimately.
