It's no use letting a relationship [or however you would dub it] string along for the benefit of the other persons feelings not getting hurt and you being miserable.

One person being in happy-sunshine-land while the other is all fake-smiles isn't fair to either part.

Hopefully the boy understood, and I can't imagine you being harsh about something like this either - I just hope he was mature enough to understand that things just weren't working out.

Yes, you definitely need to do what's right for you, and if it's not working out it's best to just break it off and go on! :)
