So...ladies and gentlefolk, we are back at environmental and cultural determinsm - Vicks did it because its normal where he comes from!! Is she fucking kidding me??? So are we saying that Vicks thinks its "normal" because he is black? Are we really going there? Also, as my friend Jess (sorry too lazy to link) said "normal" doesnt equate "moral"! ( Read more... )

I don't think it was a "Black" thing, but a "Southern" thing that she was talking about. I was dating a gal from down South, and her family was into fighting animals and placing/taking bets on it. No, it is not a moral thing, but there are parts of the country that it IS a "normal" thing. Just like Ancient Rome, where fighting slaves/Gladiators to the death, and feeding people of other religions to the lions, was a normal part of everyday life. Or in Mexico where fighting bulls, torturing and killing them brutally, is considered a way of life. That doesn't make it right, of course....but it is a fact of life. The only way it will ever stop is if EVERYONE refuses to participate. And if the people who DO participate are punished to the fullest extent of the law.

Sadly its highly popular among young black men in detroit. Similar to cock fighting among mexican males. Its an exaggeration of male masculinity that many minority males cling to in an effort to "feel" like "men" in white society.

It is also popular among hispanics in the SW AND very popular among you white subrurban men throughout the country. I think this crosses ethnic lines!

I most likely wouldnt be so upset about her words if she had attributed his actions to certain heteronormative expressions of masculinity....

people use the same excuse to beat their children too. "That's just how they were brought up."

Doesn't make it right and it is not an acceptable excuse.

She said it was aboutbring brought up in the south, not about his being black.

In many parts of the south, his behavior is considered ok, normal, and traditional.

But your friend is correct, imo - that doesnt make it right or him a victim in any way.

I grew up in not the world's best of neighborhoods and still would never, ever even concieve of doing the kind of cruel acts towards these animals as Vicks has done.

Whoopi - hopefully it might just be a stunt but if your comments are seriously for real? YOU HAVE LOST YOUR MIND
