Baseball Blasphemy

So, I haven't been getting much done at work the last couple days, being slightly distracted.  But is has given me some time to chat with some nearby cube dwellers, one of whom is a huge baseball fan who, having grown up around here, favors the Phillies, and the other of whom is a huge Yankees fan who pays a certain amount of attention to the rest ( Read more... )

I don't think there's any question that Lee is now the staff ace.

There's no guarantee that Pedro is effective at the major league level, and I think the bullpen is too worn down to give up a slot for a sixth starter. My unorthodox solution is to find something wrong with Hamels's arm and put him on the DL for fifteen days. I think he could use the rest. This gives two or three starts to Pedro and Moyer. Maybe Pedro can't cut it. Maybe he's lights out, making it a relatively easy decision to part ways with Moyer, as he's clearly the weak link.

I think the ultimate solution is for Pedro to end up in the bullpen. Condrey may not be back this year, Durbin has been shaky, so they need another right-hander in the pen. Pedro may have better stuff than Rodrigo Lopez, Tyler Walker, Kyle Kendrick, or anyone else on the forty-man roster.

But the inability to go deep. I like him for middle relief and multi-inning relief even in non-blowouts.

I'm not entirely suggesting a sixth starter, more of a "Dedicated Reliever". This weekend showed us that Jamie should not really go more than 5 innings; Assume Moyer goes 5, pinch him, put in Pedro to pitch 4. There's no reason the pen should need to be involved.

Yeah I was wondering if that approach might work as well. Apparently some organizations will do that sort of thing in the low minors to keep prospects' inning count down.

I'm guessing Myers is viewed as closer plan B in case Lidge struggles through the rest of the month.

This has been tried in the (distant) past, I believe, though I don't remember by whom. IIrc, it worked pretty well, but for some reason never caught on.
