Coffee culture/ Names for Popes

An American friend of mine recently commented that he missed the big, frothy, sit-down-and-relax coffees that you get at American coffee outlets of a slightly modish variety (they shall remain nameless). I believe the term espresso was originally a rather witty pun, based on the fact that the coffee was made expressly (or specifically) for you when you order it. Originally, it had nothing to do with the speed of either preparation or consumption.

Indeed. I was trying to be witty as well. Perhaps it refers to the fact that the boiling water is squeezed under pressure through the coffee filter? From "esprimere", to squeeze or pressure?
