And, if he left it, he either didn't care about it enough or he left it in the hopes you'd find it, be compelled to contact him, and he be shitty just one more time.

I say stick with the first thing. After a while, you stop giving the stuff back and toss it. If it meant something, they would have remembered it in the first place. Or, you could use it as a placemat under the litter box to catch all that litter!
