Menus for next week

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday, not because I revel in over-indulgence, but because I love the excuse to cook up a storm for family and friends.  I love lighting candles on the table and a fire in the fireplace; I love sitting around chatting while nibbling on favorite comfort foods; I love laughing over wine and telling stories and enjoying ( Read more... )

I can't even imagine feeding only 5 or 6, or even 10 for Thanksgiving. When we were kids, my maternal gradmother (and daugheters and other family) typically served between 50 and 80. On my mother's side we typically have been 30 and 45, if not more. This year we are actually not having Thanksgiving until Saturday. It never occurred to me to just cook for Gerrit and I, or even just our parents and I. Instead, we're using the excuse to try the Crawford Inn in Worthington and saving our home cooking for the entire family on Saturday. Now I wish I was coming up there...pithy pie crust be damned!

My pie crust turned out well! I was so excited! I made mini pumpkin pies and an apple tart, and it all came out well!

My family always did Thanksgiving at home with just the 6 of us, and saved the big cooking for Christmas, when my father's ENORMOUS family got together. So cooking for 7 instead of 6 wasn't much of a stretch, though it did make for a long day since I was doing it on my own. Well, with Patrick's help, which was a god-send, but when I was a kid, all 6 of us were in the kitchen chopping and laughing and stirring. We couldn't do that this year, since Patrick's family wasn't arriving until just before the meal, but it was still a great day.

How was your holiday?
