the existentialists say that you are afraid of freedom, which you need to face if you'll ever be "honestly" happy. but reasonably fearing the safety of structure is just as possible. i'd say that it's just the prospect of a totally new environment that scares people by default.
(obviously this is all generalized speculation as i don't know your specific dilemma. but kudos, dude)

In this case I am not afraid of the new enviornment so much as the loss of the whole senior year in high school experience.
On a different note: Did Northwestern call and tell you that they were going to send you a t-shirt? They did that to me almost a month ago and I still haven't gotten my new t-shirt. This is seriously making me go crazy everytime I check the mail.
