Oooooh, good catch -- a favorite book (as a kid) and movie (in college). Everybody oughtta see it...and what a terrific use of a poem, also a fave.

I've been asked what the hell kind of Memorial Day post this is. I'm trying to be polite and noncontroversial, and besides it comes out of heartbreak. But let's just think of that soldier I quoted before: "No, sir. The United States Army is at war. America is at the mall."

I know you're remembering, sir (and fantastic work on Rolling Thunder, btw!). So am I -- and (also like you) not just on holidays.
