Kill Your TV

I'm rapidly becoming one of those people who is almost belligerent about not having a TV. I used to think all those hippies and eggheads were just being annoying, no-fun, and holier than thou, but I kinda see where they're coming from now ( Read more... )

My dad doesn't have a TV either. He hasn't since he moved out, so like 3 years now. And you know me, I never watch tv anymore, aside from torrents or dvds... I guess my point is I think this will become more common in the near future. In my journalism class (omg my most favorite class EVERRRRR) we were talking about tv and half the class said they just watched stuff on Hulu or YouTube. I think the internet is changing the tv-watching habits of a lot of people and we're just starting to see that.

Good point. There's definitely something changing,, but it varies a lot by generation and by class I think.

Television is becoming a social thing for a lot of people again, in that people who used to watch it alone at home are now DVRing it, or waiting to watch it online, or simply buying it on DVD later so that they can watch it with friends. It's become a more theatrical experience. You now invite people over to watch TV, usually in chunks that aren't representative of the hour programming block.
That said, I think you'd really like the Fringe. Let's marathon the first season sometime.

I totally agree. And watching a big chunk of something as a social activity is a lot of fun. Just sitting alone routinely bathed in the sickly glow of the tv has list it's appeal though.

I really want to see Fringe. We should definitely do that.

This is my feeling as well. I've just returned to the US from Ireland after two years and at this point, having not had ownership of a TV for a while and having long since lost the paradigm of TV=constant talking lamp, I not only feel quite out of the cultural loop, I think I am actually bad for TVs. Honestly, I came home and tried to turn it on and all I got was static; remotes come into my hands to die. I daresay I am going to go to an antique store and get an old radio set and live all steam-punky and be weird for the rest of my days. Except I'll probably get back into House again if the opportunity affords.

I like the old radio set idea. I've become addicted to interesting radio programs now. I can even get RTE on my iPhone's radio app, which makes me feel all nostalgic, and reminds me that poor RTE is Not That Good Actually.

(And I've already resigned myself to being weird for the rest of my days for various reasons.)

House is pretty good though.
