Return

The weeks passed. Kame and Jin grew closer, relishing each moment they had together. A sweet kiss, a passionate look, and everything seemed right in the world. But what Kame had trouble comprehending was why Jin had come back in the first place. Surely, it had not been just to see Kame again, because no matter how strong Jin’s feelings could have been, Kame knew Jin never gave up what was comfortable for him for anybody else.

Finally, one night as they cuddled on the sofa and the credits of a movie they had just finished watching scrolled on the screen, Kame touched Jin’s hand tenderly. “Jin?”

Jin glanced at Kame, and held his gaze a moment before answering. “Yes, my love?”

Kame smiled at the sweet words, then returned to his inquiry. “Why…why did you come back?”

Jin was silent.

“I mean, I know it wasn’t just for me. I don’t doubt your love, but…I know you, Jin. You’re not like that. So…”

He paused for a moment.

“Why?”

Jin lowered his eyes to Kame’s hands, which were fidgeting in nervousness. Kame wasn’t sure if they had gotten yet to point where they could ask such bold questions of each other, but lovers are supposed to trust each other with everything, wasn’t that right? He felt he probably had the right to know what was going on. Hopefully, Jin wasn’t against that. Sighing, Kame started to curl his hair around his finger, waiting patiently for Jin to piece together the right words to express what was on his mind.

A long silence ensued. Finally, Jin spoke, in a quiet, hushed tone. In fact, it was so quiet, Kame had to lean forward to be sure he was hearing Jin correctly.

“I need documents.”

Confused, Kame peered at Jin curiously.

“Documents?”

Jin nodded.

“For what?”

Jin cleared his throat. “Um, well…for my doctor.”

“In…in America?”

Jin nodded again.

“So you’re going back?” Kame was trying to put together the information in his mind. Had these two months been for nothing, after all? At the thought, he felt a sinking feeling in his heart. Jin hadn’t been taking things seriously after all. Jin had never been one to take anything seriously, so why start now? Kame lowered his head into his hands. You are a fool, Kamenashi Kazuya. Such a fool for thinking things could all be so wonderful for a change. Hasn’t life taught you anything? How could you forget? Choking quietly, he tried to hold back the tears, gripping his head tighter in his hands, as if doing that would stop his heart from breaking into a million pieces. A gentle hand touched his shoulder. Kame didn’t dare to look up as Jin began to speak.

“Kazu…please don’t cry. I haven’t decided yet, whether or not I’m going back, but I’m sure as hell I don’t want to. I know what you’re thinking, Kazu; I know you better than you think I do. This wasn’t all nothing to me. I swear.” Jin swallowed as tears continued to stream down Kame’s face. “You mean…so much to me, Kazu. I love you. I would never dream of leaving you.”

“Really?” Kame whispered.

“Really.”

Kame nodded, wiping his tears away and smiling slightly to himself at how emotional he had suddenly become over the past few weeks. Suddenly, he remembered Jin’s last words before he had started crying. “What documents were you talking about? For your doctor?”

Jin pulled back.

“Documents…so they can test me further.”

“…test…you…?”

“My heart. There’s something wrong with my heart.”

“…Jin?”

“No, not in that way. I mean, physically. They…they said that they’re not sure what’s wrong. They needed documents from my doctor here in order to go on with testing.”

Stunned, Kame sat for a few seconds, gaping at Jin. “Your…heart. Oh my god, Jin…” he shook his head unbelievingly. “No…no, this can’t be happening.”

“Kazu…”

“Well, then, we have to get you on the next flight! They have to do more tests, and we have to let them as fast as possible! We need to know what’s wrong. Don’t we? So they can treat it as quickly as possible. Then we can come back. And everything w-will be ok…won’t it, Jin? WON’T IT?” Kame was desperately shaking Jin by the shoulders; surprising Jin with how much strength was contained in that slender, slightly built body. Kame’s hands shook as they held Jin’s shoulders, then dropped just as immediately to Kame’s side. “Jin?” Kame lips were pressed tightly together in a line, as he tried to control all the mixed emotions he was feeling inside.

Jin drew Kame into an embrace. “Yes, Kazu. I’ll let them test me. We’ll find out what’s wrong. Ssh, don’t worry about it, okay? Don’t turn your pretty head with such sad thoughts. We’ll be okay. I’ll always be here for you, no matter what.”

Kame gazed deep into Jin’s eyes, searching for the truth. “You promise?”

Jin put a hand over his heart. “My heart will always be yours. No matter what, I will always find a way to return to your side. I promise.”

Kame nodded, burying his face in Jin’s chest and absorbing Jin’s familiar smell. He believed in Jin.

"Everything will be alright, Kazu." Kame let the comforting words sink in, even though he knew they both knew they weren't true. It didn't matter. Everything around them was falling apart, and they had a difficult journey ahead. But if they had each other, they could tough it through. They had their love. And Kame had Jin's promise.

**Okay, that's it. Pleeasse comment. I'd really like to know what you think. *fidgets nervously*
