Why did I want to write a book? Why did I make it a memoir? What crack pipe was I smoking when I decided this was a good idea ( Read more... )

We might miss baths though. And Pringles.

So far two rejections out of six. Three people still have the ms. and/or proposal, one was a cold query. I know I am only getting started here. I just wish there was a pill I could take to not feel like shit.

Already spoke to a lawyer, friends in publishing, blah blah -- advantage of being old is that your friends actually do all these things. Finding temp work is a great idea, looking into it.

The encouragement means a lot, thanks. And on that subject, I am really enjoying your latest. Hee hee wildly promiscuous Naruto and cranky Sasuke. Brightens up my day.

Yes, we all need and deserve patrons! I don't even mind writing poems for their kids' birthdays or whatever.

Would love to send you stuff if you have time to read it. Who did you work for? Did they do edgy/dark memoir? Where should I send?

As for sending samples, that's a cool idea. For now I am working mostly through connections, and I actually made the mistake of listening to the guidelines on the sites of the two agencies where I sent cold queries and JUST sending a letter. But a sample would have helped a lot, I think.

Thanks for helping me through this!

Yeah, the "how much to send" question is tricky -- everyone has their own way of doing things, and you never know what's going to bug somebody and what won't, but any time you can get more material in front of them from the get-go it's likely to help more than it hurts. If their submission instructions specifically say that they want only query letters with no additional materials included, then I'd go with that -- but if there's any leeway, I'd include at least a sample. Assuming most places work the way the place I worked did, 95% of the submissions will be primarily reviewed (and a high percentage of those tossed) by an unpaid intern (like moi ;) or maybe a low-level assistant. That was most of my job -- reading the slush pile.

Sure thing! Glad I can help. I'll email you in like two seconds...

Whoa. A finished memoir? I'm so impressed. Don't give up now, not after you went as far as shedding the blood, sweat and tears to get it finished.

And whatever happened to the patron system? That's totally what I need to do with the rest of my life. Have someone else pay me to sit around and "think great thoughts" or just some fun and smutty ones.

Depression is fine for a bit, but chinz up. I can't wait to see it published, pseudonyms and all. ^_^
