And can someone tell me what the dress is to the far left with the stripey skirt? That seems strange to see something that looks so 1780's-1790's to me next to the dresses on the right, which I expect to see in the 1840's.

Oh, and I love it, of course. Stripes!

I think it is very similar to the lady facing her... very fitted jacket with turned back cuffs... I seem to remember some "riding" outfits that were similarly cut... but I'm not remembering where.

It's a jacket! Jackets were all the rage in the 1840s-50s (esp. the 1850s). Basically, a jacket is a bodice that has a skirting to it; it doesn't always match the skirt, altho it can.

Looks like a riding jacket over a standard skirt.
