Moral debate tip #1: Bring a dictionary

I get a little upset when I hear these so-called moral authorities (I'm ranting about the Pope today) declare unambiguously that homosexuality is 'unnatural'. To quote Inigo Montoya from The Princess Bride, "You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means

The company I work for has a support group for gay, lesbian, bi, and transgendered people. Of course, some people take issue with that, talking about how the company shouldn't support a "choice" like that.

The company covers gender change procedures, and there were quite a few words raised about that one (even some people who surprised me).

When talking about the gender-change procedure, I mentioned that brain scans have been done showing that somebody born a woman who identifies with being a male usually has a brain wired more like a male. It's a natural condition.

In the case of most gay people I've known, if they didn't realize they were gay their whole lives, those around them usually had their suspicions.

The first gay person I really knew came out to me shortly after telling his parents. His dad was a little stunned, but supportive. His mom said something along the lines of, "I've known since you were a kid."

Yep, that all sounds "unnatural" to me.

All a "choice."

Even if it were a choice, people have a right to be who

I read a fascinating article the other day on homosexuality in sheep populations that actually had a Darwinian explanation for homosexuality.

In the study they found a increased fertility of the mother of the homosexual sheep. They haven't identified the genetic mechanism yet, but it seems clear, for sheep at least, that the homosexuality is a byproduct of this increased fertility. So while the mother sheep has homosexual offspring, she has considerably more offspring overall, which is all the genes "want".

And yeah, the Pope is dumb bigot. Fuck the Pope, and fuck Rick Warren, too.

Well, Mark...we all know Darwin was a heretic and that evolution isn't real...

Some people wouldn't be so hellbent on teaching something true, like creationism alongside evolution if evolution were a fact, after all.

It's important that people know the truth: that the great sky god sent his son to die for us so that we can all be saved from the scourge of heretics who believe in reason, "facts" like evolution, and that being gay is not only all right, but "natural!"

Get with the program, man! :)

That would support my theory that it is a population control mechanism to counteract rampant over-population. I wonder if there is any research around that, i.e., increased prevalence in species with burgeoning over-population problems and a lack of predators?
