Any crochet experts ...?

I started teaching myself to crochet last summer from some old patterns of my mums. After the holiday it got put aside, but I have decided to pick it up again to make some baby blankets for my friends who are pregnant. However I've hit a problem. I have the following two books one is American and one is British so use different terminology for ( Read more... )

I'm not sure that I'm going to be a lot of help, as I do it either way, depending on what I'm making! I'm consistent within a project mind...

Personally, I think the "American" way looks neater.

everyone who has replied has said they go under both, so I'll give it a go that way. I've bought the wool this afternoon so we will see how it is looking at the end of the weekend.

I'm not an expert by any means but my very old beginner's book says to put the hook under both strands, but you can use just one if you want to vary the look of the stitch. So I would say do a couple of test pieces and see which one you like the look of best.

I like consensus, so I'm going to go with both loops. I'm hopefully going to start tonight because I have bought the wool and DH is out so my plan is to get a takeaway and watch a film with some crochet.

When I'm designing something, it genreally depends on how I want the material to be in the finished item.

But for normal crocheting I put the hook through both the loops. (apart from on the first row working from a chain of course.

Some mmore advance patterns call for you to use just the front loops. This is generally when you are making a mock rib. (like a coff or a rib on a beanie hat)

This is just a simple pattern, just one stitch throughout so I'm going to go with under both loops. I'll see how it goes over the weekend and will maybe take a photograph to show you.
